Trust
Matt did not trust anybody easily.
He had doubted Richard the first time they had met. That was quite natural seeing that Richard had called his story crap though it was anything but.
Matt hated himself for this. Why did he lack the ability to trust? Why couldn't he just meet a person and decide that he or she is trustworthy? Eventually he did end up trusting the journalist more than he could even trust himself. He was grateful for having Richard with him; he was grateful for having an adult with him who could help him, support him.
But just having Richard was not enough for Matt.
He needed the support of other gatekeepers. But the problem was Scott.
Matt did not hate Scott; he was in fact worried about him. All the torture that Scott had to go through… Matthew had no idea what it must be like for him. He tried to understand Scott, tried to help him.
But Matt knew that Scott was broken from inside. He knew that the other boy was trying to act normal but actually he was broken; he was dying.
And Matt hated himself for he was doing. He hated himself for not trusting Scott. It was not as if he did not trust him but he was sure that Scott was vulnerable; he might give them away under torture. And so he maintained his distance.
However Matt was always surprised at his own reaction at his relationship with Jamie Tyler. Jamie was a good and strong boy and Matt trusted him from the moment he set his eyes on the twin. He was so unprepared for it, for trusting somebody in one glance. He believed Jamie when he told them that he had fought in the battle in the past. He believed him when he said that Scott was not bad and that he really did not want to kill the senator. Matt believed him without doubt.
Matt felt close to him. Very close, as if Jamie was his twin. He thought that he could give up anything to have a caring brother like Jamie. Matt believed in Jamie and it was not because of his telepathic powers; it was about being honest.
Matt could trust his life with Jamie; he would not doubt him for a second.
For Matt, Pedro was another matter. He trusted Pedro even more than he trusted Jamie from nearly the time they had met. Pedro wanted nothing to do with Matt; he had tried to rob him. Matt had disliked Pedro at first. But as fate had it, Pedro risked his life to save Matt. Matt was emotionally moved though he did not show it. A stranger boy in a foreign country had risked everything for somebody like Matt. It was hard for him to believe that.
But Matt trusted Pedro. He had known that Pedro could save him from coma. He knew Pedro could and would give him life. He had given Scott's responsibility to him because he was certain that if anybody could help Scott it was Pedro. Not because he was a healer, but because Matt's friendship with Pedro was divine, because Pedro was loyal and true.
As Matt thought about it, sitting in room in hacienda, he laughed. He was being so stupid! He could trust everyone, even Scott. Yes, he even trusted Scott.
He trusted them because they were the Five; he trusted them because they were born to be united. He trusted them because he knew that without their friendship he could not live.
He simply could not live.
