Umm. This is actually my first (english) One Piece fanfiction.
The title is from the One Piece song "You are the one".
I got the idea from.. somewhere? I mean, Zoro must have thought that why did Luffy choose him as his first mate. After all, he was the fearsome pirate hunter.
I'm really sorry about the possible mistakes in spelling, and the characters may be out of character. I'm not sure, you tell me! I'd really like to get some reviews, tell me if the story was bad, etc.
The pairing is Zoro/Luffy, but it can be considered as nakamaship.
Eiichiro Oda owns One Piece.
You are the one
It was an annoyingly hot day, and the fact that Luffy was again super-energetic (mostly because they just got real a ship and a cool flag, and even a new member!) didn't help at all that Zoro just couldn't take his usual naps.
So now Zoro didn't have anything to do, since he really wasn't interested about Usopp's stories that Luffy had taken a liking to listen.
It had been now about 2 weeks since Luffy had saved him from the Marine base, and Luffy had already beated up the irritating Marine captain, Axe-Hand Morgan, that big-nosed clown and now Captain Kuro of the Kuroneko pirates, which everyone thought was dead.
Zoro really didn't keep up with that what happened.
He was known as the fearsome devil, Roronoa Zoro, the pirate hunter, and still the stupid straw-hatted boy came and decided to take him as his first mate.
But why the hell him? He could have taken someone else, but the little pirate took a pirate hunter as his nakama.
The straw-hatted boy laughed at him, poked at him when he was at the playful mood (almost always), and even got Zoro to laugh with him.
Luffy wasn't scared of him like almost everyone else was, he treated Zoro like he was just a normal human, not a devil.
Luffy was probably the first human in the world who saw right through him, knew when he was scared and knew when he was sad or at a bad mood.
And still he didn't understand, the thoughts made him feel uncomfortable and unsure of himself. He didn't want to acknowledge that actually it made him feel good, that someone really knew him and liked to just talk and spend time with him, it felt nice when someone wasn't scared of him and was so nice.
So, later that day when Luffy sat at his favourite spot, the Going Merry's figurehead and enjoyed the nice weather, Zoro went to lean on the railing next to the figurehead.
"Hi ya Zoro!" Luffy smiled that bright, goofy smile. But Zoro didn't smile, he was nervous – even if he didn't want to acknowledge it to himself.
"Is something wrong?" Luffy's smile changed into a worried look, and Zoro went straight to the point.
"Why did you choose me as your first mate?"
A second Luffy looked confused, like someone had punched him in the head, then he just suddenly burst out laughing.
"Hahaha! Are you stupid, Zoro?" Luffy looked at him.
"I don't want to hear that from you!" He snapped.
"Nee, Zoro, don't be so mad!"
"Well, could you answer?"
"Of course I choosed you, you're cool and strong!" Luffy was silent a second.
"But then, I saw that you are much more than only cool! I mean, I could tell that you were a nice person and loyal and things like that! Only the best one is worth of being my first mate."
Luffy pressed his hat firmly to his head, turned to watch forward and smile to the ocean.
Zoro couldn't help himself – he smiled almost as brightly and purely as Luffy.
