My Brother, My Best Friend
A/N: So I was watching 7th Heaven one night and Kevin was telling Roxanne how his father died and why Ben chose to become a firefighter, so a story popped into my mind. I haven't done 7th Heaven fics in ages, and I've only posted one up here and it wasn't even completed, so be please be patient while I get back into the swing of things. I'm also just starting to post on here again as well. Warning: tear-jerker. The authoress herself cried as she finished the end of the story.
Summary: What happens when Ben gets caught in a wild fire? Will the past repeat itself? One-shot.
"Come on, come on, contain the flames!" Officer Rivera shouted as he turned the hose on the west side of the house which was completely engulfed in flames.
"Alright troops, pull back." Rivera shouted a few minutes later, standing back to make sure the entire flammage had been contained. Just then, two firemen caught his eye, carrying a third. "What have we got here?"
"Smoke inhalation, collasped lung. We're not sure how long he was in there." one of the firemen said.
Rivera knelt down next to the man. "Kinkirk." he breathed, slapping his cheeks. "Come on Ben, wake up!" But the man remained motionless. "Get the paramedics over here, Roberts. And call his brother." Rivera demanded, standing back as a medic ran over to him.
Ten minutes later, Kevin arrived on the scene. "What happened?" he demanded, rushing over to his brother's side.
"He was the last one to make it out of the building." Commander Rivera replied.
"You Kevin?" One of the medics asked, walking over to him.
"Yes." Kevin told him.
"Your brother's asking for you."
Kevin nodded and went over to kneel beside his brother.
"Ke-vin." Ben rasped, struggling to sit up.
"I'm here, buddy, don't move." Kevin told him.
Suddenly Ben erupted into a fit of coughing. Tears stung his eyes. "Dying." he rasped. "Mom..." he couldn't finish the sentence before he erupted into another coughing fit.
"Ben, quit talking crazy. You will be fine." Kevin told him.
Ben struggled to smile sadly. "No, Kevin." he said quietly. "Tell Mom - I love her. And Patty. And Ma..." he stopped and started convulsing suddenly. A medic rushed over and immediately started CPR.
Kevin stood back, tears pricking his eyes. Seeing his brother's charred, burned body brought back memories of his father.
"I'm sorry." the medic suddenly spoke up, putting a comforting hand on Kevin's shoulder.
"NO!" Kevin screamed, shaking the medic's hand off of him. "Ben, talk to me. Wake up, Ben! Damnit Ben, don't you do this to me!" Kevin demanded. Nothing. Kevin couldn't believe he had lost his father and now he had lost his brother. The exact same way. He knelt down and took his brother's cold, callused hand. The tears started to flow freely. "I hope you can hear me." he said quietly. "You were more than my brother, Ben. You were my best friend. Tell Dad -" he choked up and paused for a moment before continuing. "Tell Dad I love him and I miss him." he stared into those frozen, blue eyes and leaned down to peck a kiss on his forehead. "I love you, little brother." he whispered before getting up and walking slowly back to his cruiser.
