It wouldn't stop.
No matter how many jokes he made. No matter how many visions he had of Kate, irritated with him for teasing her and imagining her scantily dressed. No matter how hard he tried, it wouldn't stop.
He knew he'd gone too far with McGee. The poor kid was still just a probie. He hadn't been a cop or a homicide detective on rough and brutal streets, exposed to the evil of the world in his own backyard.
So Tony was grateful that McGee hadn't been on that rooftop and hadn't seen what he had. Because the reason he went too far with McGee was because he would do anything to drown out the scene on loop in his head.
