"So she says, 'Baby',
It's 3AM, you must be lonely."
Maya stared at the dancing figures on her bedroom ceiling.
It had been hours since she had first crawled into bed, and she hadn't gotten a wink of sleep. All she could think about was how the brunette that usually called her at night to make sure that she was feeling alright hadn't even called her once yet that night. Maya supposed that she was acting stupid, but it actually made it harder for her to sleep at night, not getting a call from Riley.
Most of the time, when Riley would call her at nighttime, their conversations would be simple. "Are you feeling alright?" "Yes, just let me sleep." Riley would say a humble goodnight and Maya would fall asleep in moments after that.
Riley was at her grandparents' house. She couldn't call Maya from her grandparents' house.
Maya gripped her blanket and sighed, turning around in her bed and clenching her eyes shut, although she knew it was no use. She would never get any sleep without talking to Riley before bed, it just wouldn't happen.
When Riley had first started calling Maya in the middle of the night, it had bugged Maya to no end. Of course, that was back when the two of them had first met each other back in elementary school, and Maya was supposed to be asleep by 8:30 PM. Since then, she had become used to getting the calls from Riley, and it comforted her to know that her best friend cared enough about her to want to check up on her every night.
12 AM. Still no call from Riley.
Maya wasn't sure why she was still bothering with waiting. Riley had specifically told her that her parents hadn't allowed her to bring her cellphone to her grandparents' house and so she wouldn't be able to call Maya while she was there.
From her bedside table, Maya was surprised to hear the sound of her cellphone ringing.
She lazily picked it up, just expecting it to be some stranger trying to sell her something in the middle of the night. "Hello?" Her voice sounded tired as she spoke quietly into her cellphone, yawning a little.
"Hi Maya, are you feeling alright?"
Maya felt as if her heart was practically ripping out of her chest. Riley's voice was on the other end of the phone, and she spoke with that same soft and caring voice like she always did whenever she called Maya in the middle of the night to check up on her. "Riley! I thought that you said that you wouldn't be able to call me because your parents wouldn't let you take your cellphone?"
Maya could almost feel Riley smiling on the other end of the line. "Yes, but I ended up smuggling my phone here anyways. I know you, and I just knew that you wouldn't be able to sleep if I didn't call you first."
Her cheeks burned a bright pink. "W-What? That's not true!"
Riley giggled, her voice so sweet and angelic. It was one of the many things that Maya loved about her. "Don't lie to yourself, Maya. I know that you secretly like it when I call you at night. You don't have to deny that."
"Yeah, yeah. Just let me sleep."
"Alright. Goodnight, my sweet Maya."
Maya heard the phone click and she knew that Riley had hung up. She sighed, and put her phone back on her bedside table before cuddling back up under her sheets and closing her eyes shut. She found herself blushing when she thought about what Riley had said. Maybe she did really need to have Riley call her every night in order for her to fall asleep properly.
Nevertheless, Maya lulled into slumber not long after that.
"And she says 'Baby',
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes.
She said that rain's going to wash away, and I believe it."
