She was sitting alone on the edge of the clearing, leaning back against a tree, eyes gazing upward at the glittering stars. He greeted her with a light touch on the shoulder. She moved her gaze to him and smiled warmly. He smiled back and slipped an arm around her shoulders as he sat down.
"They're beautiful, aren't they?" she asked.
"What, the stars? Yeah, I guess."
"You guess?"
"I'm a guy. I'm not the 'romantic' type."
"Whatever you say, oh one with the emotional range of a teaspoon."
He smiled to himself, remembering the first time she made that accusation. She had repeated it several times since, but this time he decided to surprise her. So, in the calmest voice he could manage for what he was about to say, he declared: "They are beautiful. And so are you."
She blushed and smiled. He smiled too, satisfied that no more teaspoon remarks would be coming anytime soon, and glad that he seemed to have actually done something right for once. He hadn't done much correctly in the seven years he had known her. He looked at her, remembering all the times he'd teased her, called her a know it all. But he knew she was more than that. She was beautiful, and brilliant, and perfect.
As he was considering this, she felt his gaze on her and turned to face him. Their eyes met, and in an instant they knew the other was also remembering the past seven years. The ones that had brought adventure, danger, friendship, loss, and love. Perhaps most importantly though, the past seven years had brought them to each other. It had taken awhile, but every moment had been worth it if they had led to this particular moment in time.
Now it was as if they shared one brain. Simultaneously, they leaned in. Their lips met. It was not the first time, and it would not be the last. But for this moment, they were completely immersed in one another. Emotions were surging through them, emotions kept bottled up for seven years. And all these emotions could be described in three little words, which they spoke simultaneously after the kiss: "I love you."
