Wherever You Will Go
"So lately, been wondering, who will be there to take my place,
When I'm gone, you'll need love to light the shadows on your face"
Goddamn local radio! Jack was on his way to his cabin, just to get away from the office for a few days. Do a spot of fishing, like the good old days. The only problem with this was the stretches of road with little to no radio coverage, and right now, the only signal he was picking up was from the local station, where they appeared to be having a love-song marathon. Song after song of people moaning, whining and whinging about their love lives. Why oh why hadn't he remembered his CDs?
If going back to the cabin wasn't enough of a reminder of what he'd left behind, this song wasn't helping. He really didn't need reminding of Samantha Carter. His Sam. Well, at least she could have been his, if he'd let her. Jack sighed heavily. He hated this song, but it continued to drone out of the speakers, as if to spite him.
"If I could, then I would, I'll go wherever you may go"
Whether he liked it or not, this song reminded him of her. It wasn't his fault he got promoted out of Stargate Command. He was getting to old to keep going gallivanting around the galaxy anyway. And they had their new boy now. Lieutenant Colonel Cameron Mitchell. He could pick up where he left off on the whole evil-aliens-taking-over-the-galaxy-and-destroying-Earth problem.
"Then I hope there's someone out there who'll bring me back to you"
Well, that wasn't all that hard. He could make up pretty much any excuse to go visit his old team back at the SGC. And although the trip across country was tiring and time-consuming, it was always worth it to see them all again. Especially Carter. And Daniel, he supposed. Life wasn't quite the same without Daniel. Even Teal'c was a welcome change from the desk-fossils back in DC.
But they'd changed. They'd found a new leader in Mitchell. And he was a good man, Jack knew, but he couldn't help the small niggling feeling that he'd been replaced.
"My life and love may still go on
In your heart, in your mind,
I'll stay with you for all of time"
Jack smiled at that. Yeah, he knew he was still well and truly still in their hearts. In her heart. They'd never forget him.
"If I could make you mine, I'll go wherever you will go"
Who was he kidding? It was too late. He'd had his chance and he'd waited too long. He lived a whole country away, for Christ's sake. And he was too goddamn old!
The song finally ended, only to be replaced by yet another moping love song. Jack shut it off in frustration. That was enough. And he was almost at his cabin anyway.
