Where did I go wrong?
There Vegeta stood, trembling, fists clenched tight, unable to remove his gaze from the body of his son lying sprawled out on the ground.
So still. So wrong.
Where did I go wrong?
Vegeta had felt pain before. Had felt it so much that it didn't faze him like it would a normal man. Pain was normal. Pain he could deal with. Or at least, that's what he had thought. He was not prepared for the onslaught of emotional pain seeing his son killed before his eyes would bring on.
Where did I go wrong?
The events from the past few minutes replayed themselves in Vegeta's mind, like a horrific movie cursed to forever run itself over and over in the proud Saiyan's head. He saw Gohan, shoulders slumped and head down as he mourned over his father's fate. Suddenly, the wind picked up. Dust and debris collected itself in one large, massive cloud across the clearing. Vegeta could only watch in stunned horror as the beam ripped out of the cloud, shot like a cursed bullet across the clearing, and impaled itself in his son's chest.
Where did I go wrong?
Lavender hair flying in the wind, blue eyes wide with shock and pain, Trunks fell. Vegeta could hear Cell laughing, could hear him gloating over his return as his son threw up whatever life was left in him.
Where did I go wrong?
These thoughts and memories all pitched and turned in Vegeta's head like a whirlwind. His son was dead. Trunks, the only person who ever truly loved him, was dead.
Where did I go wrong?
Everything his son did for him, Vegeta ignored. Trunks fought for him, defended him, protected him when it was necessary, and never once did Vegeta return the favor.
Where didn't I go wrong?
Vegeta stood there now, staring at the lifeless body of his one and only son as these thoughts played themselves out in his mind. His shock and grief were quickly replaced by fury. How dare he. How dare Cell take away something so important to Vegeta. How dare he kill Trunks without the slightest care of how the father, the Prince of all Saiyans, would react.
He will regret this. He will regret this for however long Vegeta allows him to live. The trickery he could take. The mockery he could bear. But this time Cell had gone too far. Vegeta would make sure he paid the ultimate price for what had been done to his son.
Trunks…my son…I will avenge you…
Vegeta turned away from the dead body of his beloved son, and let his fury consume him.
