This is a poem I wrote centered around Aida. In this opera/musical, Aida and Radames are "star-crossed lovers." Aida is the princess of the fallen country of Nubia, and Radames is engaged to the princess of Egypt, the country that conquered Nubia. They end up falling in love, and at the very end are caught and sentenced to death by being buried in a tomb. The princess of Egypt has befriended both of them, and convinces her father to allow them to die in the same tomb.

Exactly what would Aida be thinking in this situation? Obviously, if you listen to the opera and/or musical, she's afraid, yet resigned to her fate and the fact that death is the only release for the two of them. So, that's what I tried to convey in this poem… enjoy!

Death Shall Not Part, My Love

By the Almighty SporkGoddess

As we descend into the darkness

My heart begins to race

Not from my impending doom

But merely at the sight of your face

For even after memorizing

Every crevice of your skin

Your visage still captivates me

Touching my heart and soul deep within

So little time we had together

How fast hourglass sand slides

But the love we shared was forever – is eternal

My heart is tranquil though my brain still chides

Yes, it chides – Is loving you a crime?

In our situation, I guess it must be so

But, my love, I cannot keep away from you

Come what may – Our love will only continue to grow

Around us, only darkness now

But you are all the light I need

The air leaves my lungs and blood

But only to your own breath do I pay heed

You say "I'm tired of this life we're living

Tired of the tyranny and lies

Tired of days without you there

Of endlessly saying our good-byes

"Who needs to live, anyway,

If living means you are not there?

My body would be perfectly fine,

But my heart gone – For yours I share"

I say, "You own my heart and I, yours

Our time on earth is almost through

But I have no regrets, none at all

For even after the very end, I will be with you"

No need to feel sorrow now

No need to let out laments or cries

I feel your lips upon my own

As I gaze into the dying embers of your eyes

We've said goodbye one last time

Our souls unite far away above

We gave our lives so that we may live

Death shall not part – You are my life

My one and only love
