On January 10th 1991, American World Quiditch champion Isaac Jackson and his wife, Kelly, had their first son, whom they named Thomas. Tom showed a love for flying at a very young age. By the time his sister, Emily was born in 1993, Tom spent most of his time on toy broomsticks. Two years later, when the youngest Jackson child, Corey, was born, Emily was showing a similar love of flying, and Tom was flying on real broomsticks.

Growing up, Thomas and his family traveled a lot with their father. Watching his father play Quiditch gave Thomas dreams of playing the sport, but other than flying with his brother and sister, few opportunities presented themselves. In 2001, Isaac Jackson retired from professional Quiditch after leading the American International team to its third World Cup win under his leadership. The family finally settled down in Minnesota, where both Isaac and Kelly grew up.

On September 1st, 2002, Thomas got on the ship from Duluth, to Supernus School of Magic, on Lake Superior. Here Tom joined boys and girls from all over the Midwest and Canada. In Supernus, there were no houses; instead, students are separated by year. First and second years were together; third, fourth and fifth years were together, and sixth and seventh years were together.

It was at the first/second year table at the back, during the start of the year feast, that Tom met Jeffrey Matthews. The two were polar opposites. Tom was a "pure-blood," whereas Jeff was a muggle born. Jeff was loud, social, and funny, but Tome was quiet and liked to be alone. The two were best friends by dessert.

After dinner, the first years were led back to their dorms. There was a mad rush as kids tried to get the best rooms. Tom, Jeff, and two boys they had met at the feast pulled their trunks into a fairly small room. To excited to sleep, the four young wizards talked until, one by one, they drifted off to sleep.
