Lead Me to Salvation

Lead Me to Salvation

"Irvy! Irvy! Come an' look at this!!!!" Selphie ran through the kitchen of Matron's house. "Irrrrvvvy!!!!" In her hand was a colorful piece of paper.

"He's not here."

Selphie stopped running and looked over at the table. "Squall!" She was completely oblivious to his silence and monotonous ways, even as a child. "Look at this!"

He took the paper from Selphie and stared at it. It was a funny swirl of yellow, blue, black, and pink. "…what is it?"

"It's aberstract art!" She sat next to Squall. "Ya see, aberstract art is cool, cause ya can draw it how you like." Squall looked at the pointless mix of colors.

"…whatever."

"No!" She pointed to a pink swirl in the corner. "This is my Chocobo!"

"You don't have one."

"And this here…" which was a blue dot with yellow spirals around it. "This is Irvy and Zell and Quisty and you and me." She pointed to an ugly green-brown-red-black splotch on the bottom of the page. "That's Seifer. He's stupid."

Squall put the paper on the table.

Selphie frowned. "You don't like it?"

"No…it's nice…"

"Well then…" She found a piece of paper and a green crayon on the table. "You try."

"Me?"

"Yeah."

Squall sat with the paper in front of him and the crayon in his fist. He made a few awkward marks on the paper. "…there."

Selphie tilted her head and stared at it for a while. "….oh! I see it!" She grinned. "It's Ellie, isn't it?"

"…um…" Honestly, Squall just saw it as a few stupid marks on a piece of paper, nothing more. However, when he looked at it in Selphie's way…it did look like Sis. His Sis. The picture salvaged memories that he was too depressed to think of.

"See, Squall? You an do aberstract art too!" Selphie smiled again. "Here…you can have this picture. I can make more."

"…thanks." She gave him the picture and walked out of the kitchen.

And Squall smiled.

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Selphie….happy birthday to you!"

Selphie blew out the nineteen candles on her cake. It was two years since the fall of the sorceress. After that, she had been involved with Irvine. Life was simply perfect.

Squall was not a birthday party man. He was a bit left of center in this kind of situation. However, Rinoa grabbed him and brought him into the middle of the party.

"Aw, guys…this is great!" Her eyes were big and round. "I can't think of anything better then this! All my friends…" She stood. "Well, I'm gonna get some more plates and stuff."

I really hope she remembers. Squall held an envelope in his hand and followed Selphie.

She had a handful of paper plates and plastic forks when she saw Squall. "Heyyy, Squall!"

"Hey." He was uncomfortable. "Um…I thought that you would like this." Selphie gave Squall the condiments as she took the envelope. "It's just a little something."

"Cool." She opened the envelope and took out a piece of paper. "Squall…?" As she opened the paper, Squall looked away.

Selphie didn't recognize the picture at first. That is, until she saw the other paper wrapped up with it. It was the picture that Squall drew, with the few simple green marks. "Oh…I-I can't believe you saved this."

"Well…it meant a lot. You helped me remember Sis." He tried to smile. "That was important to me."

"I can only imagine…" Selphie grinned. "Thanks, Squall. It's nice to know that you remembered this." She laughed. "I'm about to cry….tee-hee."

Squall laughed a bit. "Should we go back to the party?"

"Yeah, c'mon!!!"

And they both walked back, remembering that day when a picture proved to be worth a thousand words and a million memories.
