SECOND CHANCES
Hoping to come across a rare book store, Dean and Sam find
something that neither of them had ever dreamed possible...
-/-

Wandering the high street of a pretty mid-western town, the Winchester brothers hunted...For a book store. Sam insisted he needed a "new" old book. Why, Dean couldn't imagine. The bunker's library held hundreds! Still, relaxed and between cases, Dean happily indulged his baby brother. While they walked, Dean conducted a major research piece; noting which of them the eyes of each pretty female they passed lingered longest over, cheerfully keeping a running score.

"Eight six, to me...Nine six, to me...Ahh, she's yours. Nine seven..."

Having called Dean a caveman, Sam worked hard to appear a picture of disinterest and distain, until a particularly attractive young woman passed by and he heard no score. That's when Sam realized Dean wasn't by his side. He spotted Dean standing motionless a few yards behind, staring at a park across the road, oblivious to his obstructing the sidewalk.

Concerned, Sam back-tracked.

"You ok?"

His voice soft, serious, Dean had an odd expression on his face.

"Do you think the idea everyone has a twin is true?"

"A double? Maybe, but I've never seen another you...Thankfully."

Dean frowned.

"I'm serious!...Follow me."

Dodging traffic, Dean headed for the park. Puzzled, Sam followed, waiting while Dean scanned the area.

"This way!"

"Dean...?"

Already gone, Dean strode over grass, closer to the children's play area. Sighing, Sam hurried after him.

Stopping again, Dean stared around the enclosed play area.

"Dean? What's wrong?"

"Over there! Look...The couple with their backs to us...The man."

Sam looked, the dark haired man turned around, and smiled. Sam stared...Sam stared harder.

"Dad?"

-/-

As if hearing Sam's incredulous murmur, he winked, nodding once. The female called out.

"John? Our boys and I need ice-cream...Guess who's buying?"

Dean stumbled backwards, into Sam's steadying arms. Sam heard his hushed whisper.

"Mom?"

Two boys of roughly seven and three clamped hold, one to each of John's legs.

"Yaaay! Ice-cream!" "Aaay! I scweeeem!"

John's love and laughter rang out clear.

"I surrender! Anything...Everything...It's yours!"

At last, Mary lifted her gaze to the watchers, lingering first on a trembling Dean, then on Sam. A glance at the two younger boys, then back to the Hunter brothers. She blew a delicate kiss, and placed a hand over her heart in silent message, then their family finally walked away. Dean voiced the final scores.

"One love Sammy...To us both."
