Author's Note: The universe and concepts are all completely conceived and owned by Tamora Pierce. I claim none of it but mine own original characters. All hail the queen of the tortallan universe! *bows low to Tamora Pierce*

Please be nice and read muh story, it's a new fangled idea for me, I'm new to writing, (if you've glanced at my other fic, Sarrasri's Fate -unfinished- you can probably tell.) so please review, and be frank and all, but if you wish to flame, do just email me at rockfieldfarm@uniserve.com

The Shang Raven

Prologue

Caspin was the first son of king Rould and his queen. He was born five years before crown prince Jonathan, though even he never learned of him. A seer had explained to the queen that it was important that the kingdom know nothing of the pregnancy, and that she would probably suffer great grief from it. She did as she had been instructed, and in the last days before the birth Duke Baird was called away, and his quiet but somewhat sinister assistant Jeggar was left to cover the birthing.
When the queen went into labor Jeggar delivered the baby with no trouble, but the queen was asleep through the birth. He gave the baby to the midwife and told her to take him to the inn, The Fickle Finch. As soon as she was gone, he woke the queen and explained to her that the baby was badly developed, and still born. The queen sobbed, and the king comforted her, thanking the gods that they had not announced the pregnancy to the kingdom.

Of course, the boy was quite alive. He lived a normal life and had no idea he was by blood right a Duke of Conte and heir to the throne of Tortall. He was poorly trained in his strong magical gift, as he had been adopted by a very poor fisherman and knew almost no-one with magic.
He in his time loved a beautiful woman with no fortune to speak of and had a son, whom he named Ailill. The lost Conte duke died in a magical accident, leaving his strange lover to look after his son. The mother, who's name he had never known, did her best.
The strange Jeggar resurfaced when Ailill turned five.
He came with a man, who's sharp features where hardened further by battle. With his mother's permission, Ailill was examined by this man and pronounced very fit for Shang training. In fact, the man was astounded by the boy's deep, intelligent, crystal clear blue eyes, and his apparent will to strive to be the best he could, even though he was only five. His mother bade him a tearful farewell and was never seen again. Ailill heard years later that she had died of a mysterious illness only a week after he had left. No-one living, not even Ailill himself, was aware that he possessed a deep and very powerful wild magic.

Authors Note: Well. I know there is really very little in her books about the Shang warriors and their way of life, but I'm gonna give this a shot. Review, do. I'll greatly appreciate it. I will update in a day or two.
