You're holding onto promises, as if they actually meant something.
You seem to be tossing around 'I love yous,' as if you've never heard of heartbreak.
You're too over-your-head to realize that it's not real love.
Young love is bittersweet, with all the consequences of real love but never as fun. Although, your parents believe you'll get over it eventually, and you'll love someone else.
But you believe otherwise, because he tells you to.
You guys hold hands, as if you'd never let go. This makes you believe.
That maybe, just maybe, young love will last forever. That maybe this is really a love story. He's the prince and you are the princess. You're Juliet and he is Romeo.
Maybe.
But after all, you are just thirteen and this is just your first relationship.
Your first kiss is sweet and soft. One tiny peck on the lips makes your head spin.
For a moment, you think that life is perfect.
But this year, you are in the eighth grade and next year, you'd be going to high school.
Next year, you'd be going to different high schools.
You're confident though, that you'll make it through, because this was supposedly love.
LOVE.
But things were different now. He was going to Briarwood Academy and you were going to Octavian Country Day.
It was time to worry.
It was finally time to grow up.
A week before your eighth grade graduation, he tells you. That skies don't always stay blue. Blooming flowers start to die. Magic fades away. Dreams might never come true. And that he no longer loves you.
What will happen to the long walks home? What will happen to the morning Starbucks coffee? What will happen to the "IMY" and "ILY" text messages over the weekends?
The world is spinning around you.
What will happen to Claire Lyons and Josh Hotz?
Where was their forever?
It was gone.
And as you take a deep breath, and shudder in your Keds, you realize.
That the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
That first loves never really work out. It's practically the love you'll want to remember forever but the heartbreak you'll never forget.
And that, it's finally time to grow up.
maybe we turn reality into something we want it to be. maybe we hope for things that no one else sees. we're wrong to believe, maybe we're dreaming.
