Chapter One: Draco Malfoy
"You'll soon find out some wizarding families are better than others, Potter. You don't want to go making friends with the wrong sort. I can help you there."
The blonde boy, Draco Malfoy, extended his hand out to me. He was about two feet in front of me. Taking his hand would be polite, but, that would mean agreeing to becoming friends with him, even though he had just insulted Ronald Weasly and his family. To be fair, Ron had made fun of his name.
"What will it be Potter?" Malfoy asked.
I took a deep breath. I grasped his cold, pale hand and shook it. His slivery blue eyes were filled with pride. Ron and Hermione Granger, who were sitting in the seats of the compartment, gasped. "Then I suppose that you would like to leave these people and sit with us in the empty compartmet?" Malfoy asked, gesturing to the glass door.
I smiled and nodded. "Lead the way."
Malfoy nodded to Goyle, who held open the door for Malfoy and let me and Crabbe in before he shut he door. This confirmed my suspions that Crabbe and Goyle were a sort of bodygaurds or maybe servants for the Malfoy boy.
For a split moment I felt a shed of regret. Should I have stayed with the others? They seemed nice enough. But, Maloy was also polite, and, he seemed to want to impress me. That was something that I never thought I would think. Someone wanted to impress me, Harry Potter. I guess that, in the wizaring world, I am pretty important for defeating Volemort. I made a mental note to ask Malfoy about that. In the compartment, Malfoy sat down on the left, Crabbe and Goyle on either side of him. I sat directly across him, getting the whole seat to myself. It was awkward for a moment, just Malfoy, Crabbe, Goyle, and I staring at each other in silence.
"Harry Potter. I forgot that my mother told me that we were the same age." Malfoy was he first to break the silence.
"What is so important about me anyway?" I blurted out before I could stop myself.
Malfoy scoffed. "You don't know why you are famous? Really?"
I shrugged, embarresed. "Hagrid mentioned something about a Dark Wizard named Voldemort. That's all I know."
Malfoy flinched at the name, though it wasn't as bad as Hagrid. "When you were a baby, only a year old, the Dark Lord went to your home. Your mother, Lily, and your father, James, were killed by him. When he tried to kill you, he lost all of his power."
"Whoa."
Goyle chuckled. Malfoy gave him a sharp look, silencing him efficently. "What's Slytherin? Hufflepuff? Are they houses?"
"Yes. There are a total of four houses." Malfoy held up four long pale fingers.
"Gryiffindor: were the brave and pure hearted heroes dwell. Ravenclaw: were witt beyond reason is a man's greatest treasure.
Slytherin: only the purest and most cunning are alllowed there.
And Hufflepuff is were everyone left out goes. As I told you in Malkins, I am sure that I will be in Slyherin."
I sighed. "I bet that I'm in Hufflepuff." I looked out the window in vain.
Malfoy laughed loudly. It startled me, and I jumped in my seat.
"The day that Harry Potter is put in Hufflepuff is the day that I find out Goyle is a girl!"
This caused all four of us to join the laughing.
"Hey, Malfoy,"
"Draco."
" Okay. Draco, do you think I'll be put in Slytherin?"
Malfoy smiled, his grey eyes bright. "Of course."
