--For Your Birthday—

Rachel's nose crinkled in distaste as she eyed Jacob who was smiling shyly at her.

"What do you want?" she snapped. "You're not getting any more of my underwear no matter what story you have!"

The gossip thrust his hand out, forcing her to take a bunch of strings. She looked up to see a group of three balloons of different shades of pink. They proclaimed 'Happy Birthday!' in silver cursive.

"H-happy birthday, Rachel. Have fun." She watched as he turned and walked away. His shoulders were slumped as he stared at the ground.

At the end of Glee practice, Rachel approached Finn, oddly hopeful that he would have remembered.

"Hi, Finn."

He turned around, smiling. "Oh hey, Rach." He spotted the balloons that she still held. "Oh, is it your birthday?"

She nodded, his smile grew bigger.

"Happy birthday, then."

He left the room, leaving Rachel standing there. A small pout formed on her lips.

That was it? No present? No birthday kiss... Just a happy birthday?

Life was totally unfair.

--

On her way across the parking lot she fell, scrapping her knee. She hissed in pain. Today just wasn't her day.

A hand came into her vision, and she grabbed it.

"Hey, Rachel." Jacob Israel smiled at her.

She nodded. "Hi, Jacob."

The teen turned to walk away, but she called out his name.

"Yes?"

"Um..." she paused, biting her lip, "how did you know it was my birthday?"

Jacob shook his head, once more turning away. He called out over his shoulder. "You do not want to know."

Rachel inwardly laughed before realising that Jacob was now halfway across the car park.

She ran after him. "Wait!"

She ended up stopping in front of him, panting.

"What is it?" He smiled at her once again. This guy must have had the patience of a saint to be able to not look bothered at all when she kept stopping him.

"Just... thank you. For, you know, the balloons." She raised her hand that was grasping the strings slightly.

He nodded. "Okay... and you ran all that way just to thank me?"

"No... I came over here... to do... this."

She pressed their lips together.
