It hit him like a bullet, the sudden realization leaving him breathless. He was in love. Well, maybe not in love yet, but he was definitely developing a crush. It had to be it. There was no other explanation for the uninvited butterflies fluttering all over his guts whenever she touched him or just stood near enough for him to smell her. There was also the sudden need to be helpful - to her, to no one else but her. A man like him, tough and hard as life had made him, just didn't go offering to do stuff for a girl just to be nice. Men like him weren't nice. He didn't do things for nothing; he always wanted something in return. And it made him frustrated and angry at himself to realize that all he wanted in return now was her attention, her smile, her presence. He wanted her. Of all women in the 'verse, with thousands of women he could easily have, he wanted the one he had all the reasons in the 'verse not to want, the one woman who had all the reasons in the 'verse not to want him. And he couldn't blame her. He had always done everything in his best interest, only now his interest was taking a sudden 180-degree turn, and these harsh changes weren't something he was very fond of, which only made him even angrier. He had promised himself he wouldn't care about anything other than his own muscular ass. He had promised he wouldn't let his guard down around a woman ever again. He had promised he wouldn't fall in love. And that slip of a girl was making him break all of his promises, one by one. There was only one promise left to break now, and as he stared at those sweet cherry lips only inches from his face, he knew that final promise wouldn't last much either. He was going to kiss that crazy girl. And damn it he wasn't going to enjoy it. Jayne Cobb had never been a man to keep his word, anyways.
