Soda and Steve were best friends. No. Brothers. They weren't brothers by blood but they were 'two peas in a pod' is what Mrs. Curtis called them. Before Steve's hatred and before Soda's expertise comforting, It really bothered the boys that they were only friend brothers and not brothers by blood.
"Hey Steve..." Soda said one day. Both him and Steve were 5, Pony was with Mrs. Curtis in the garden and Darry and Mr. Curtis were playing ball in the park with Two-bit.
"Yeah Soda?" Steve replied innocently moving a car back and forth. He had a bruise on his cheek from his old man.
"Why can't we be real brothers?" Soda asked frowning, looking up at Steve from his car.
"We are real brothers." Steve said matter of factly.
"Nuh-uh, I mean real brothers like Pony and Darry." Soda said, Steve frowned thinking hard about the question.
"Cause I don't have your blood I guess, I mean, we both have different moms and dads." Steve said smiling at how smart he sounded.
"Lets be real brothers then." Soda said smiling mischievously, Steve tried raising an eyebrow but instead raised both.
"How?" He said losing interest in the toy car completely.
"I saw Darry and Paul do this." Soda said grabbing Steve's hand and going to Darry's room. He looked around In The drawers and found what he was looking for, Darry's pocketknife
. "S-soda that's Darry's..." Steve said staring at the blade after Soda's struggle to open it.
"C'mon Steve lets be brothers." Soda said smiling, Steve reluctantly smiled and nodded.
"How we gonna do that?" Steve said confused on why Soda was holding the blade.
"Like this." Soda said and pricked his finger. Tears began to stream down his face as his finger began to bleed. Steve did the same thing, trying not cry at the pain.
"Ready, Steve." Soda asked getting ahold of himself.
"Ready Soda." Steve replied and they put their bleeding fingers together.
"Now we're blood brothers." Soda smiled and Steve did with him. They were officially but secretly brothers!
Steve looked down at his scarred finger and chuckled at the memory. He sat on a stool at Bucks, but got up and went outside. He really missed his brother. It wasn't fair that he had to die so young, and for such a pointless reason. Steve looked up at the sky as a few tears escaped. I hope to see you soon, Blood Brother
