Broken Beginnings
I was Toph Bei Fong of the Bei Fong family. And I am completely and totally blind. Yet I see. I see with my other senses. They say that when one sense is lost, the other senses are heightened considerably.
It is actually my sense of touch that sets me apart from most people with my disability. With out my shoes, I can feel other people's movements through vibrations in the ground. It isn't the same as eyesight, but it is all I've ever known. My parents sent me once a week to study martial arts with Master Yu. I didn't really like the lessons, but as they were my only time away from my parents I endured.
Throughout my childhood, I became fascinated with the style of Hung Ga. I practiced what little Master Yu taught me in secret until one night I became fed up with being treated like a docile doll and ran away.
It was easy for me to slip out of the manor; the hard part was finding my way along the country side. It was cold that night, and I had been exhausted from practicing my Hung Ga. I was only twelve years old.
I remember running through the forest. The grass felt sharp against my tender feet, only egging me on farther. My sides were aching, but still I ran, heedless of the foreign land ahead of me. Then all at once, the ground fell from beneath me. I screamed as anguish rammed into me, my legs broken. Tears spilled from my eyes and I hated myself for not paying attention.
And though death should have rightly come, all that was present was pain. Endless pain until finally I lost myself to it.
