"Promise me you'll come back," she pleaded. "Whatever it takes."

"Always," Severus said, and he gave her a soothing smile only she ever saw. "It's just a party, Lily; a few drinks and a chat. I'll be back."

Leaving the tower that night still haunted his dreams; twelve years on and he could still smell the lavender talc she had brushed through her hair. When he took those spiral stairs, two at a time in a shameful attempt to reach his dark master, a small part of him knew that he was saying goodbye.

"Promise me you'll come back," she pleaded.

And he did; as promised he returned. She had sat there for hours, never moving and still staring into the night sky when he had finally ascended those stairs to the tower once more.

"Whatever it takes."

She was beautiful against the pale moonlight: hair of fire, eyes of emerald, ivory skin. He had watched her for a moment before crossing the room; vaguely aware that his step held a new bounce – arrogance and power.

She turned to him and smiled, but when she saw his eyes she stopped; for who had returned she did not know.

Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this. As of late, I've been a little intrigued by Snape and Lily; I don't know if I want to make it one of my pairings just yet, because I'm currently obsessed with Snanger/Snamione, but who knows?

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate and to those who don't, just be safe.
