"A charming young female," the Receiver of Memory observed as the new Fish Hatchery Attendant returned to her seat. "Rather petite for her age, though, isn't she?"
The Elder next to him stirred uneasily, but answered, "Yes, she always was. Even as a newchild, she was by far the smallest of her year."
The Receiver chuckled, and gazed out at the rows of adults-in-the-making. "Little Twelve girls in three straight lines," he murmured to himself. "The smallest, One, was Madeline."
"I beg your pardon?" said the other Elder.
The Receiver sighed. "Oh, nothing."
