The two sat in Ashton's lab, Olivia on a stool at the end of the table and Ashton on a chair in the middle of one of the long sides. Ashton was busy creating something that Olivia couldn't even begin to comprehend. The results of Ashton's work always surprised her, especially seeing as she had no idea what each of the ingredients did and what they did when mixed together.
"Have you ever been shocked by something before?" Olivia asked as she watched her boyfriend's hands messing with the objects on the table, pouring and mixing ingredients.
"Nothing shocks me. I'm a scientist," Ashton replied, his eyes still on the work in front of him on the table.
"But surely there must be something that that has shocked you before," Olivia said in a questioning tone, her innocent ice blue eyes wide.
Ashton set the beaker he had been holding, which had looked about ready to overflow with bubbles, down on the table. He looked at it for a moment, contemplating Olivia's statement, his brow furrowed.
"I suppose there is one thing that has shocked me. But then, it is something that I have never completely understood, which makes it understandable that I would not understand it and it would therefore shock and surprise me."
"Really? What is it that surprised you?"
Ashton turned towards Olivia, his dark eyes mapping her confused face. Her pale, freckled skin. Her light sky eyes. Her long fair red hair pulled up in pigtails. The way she expressed emotion so easily, so carelessly. It was all the complete opposite of his dark skin, chocolate eyes, brunette hair, and generally blank expression.
"That you could ever find it in you to love me."
