What Frightens Him The Most
For a long time, Dean seemed to be invincible or at least he did in his little brother's eyes. Dean who never seemed fazed when Dad vanished for days on end, Dean who could deal with hotel managers and school boards. For a long time, Sam honestly believed that Dean wasn't frightened of anything, not even their Dad.
When Dean started hunting with Dad, the thought occasionally popped into Sam's head that perhaps Dean would be afraid then, but Sam never saw anything that said that was the case. He wondered if he would ever feel the same way.
The nights when Sam was alone waiting for Dad and Dean to come back were terrifying. He was frightened of anyone knocking on the door and he didn't dare consider the possibility that they wouldn't come back and that he would be left all alone.
Sam was eighteen and already packed for Stanford, the first time he realized that Dean actually wasn't invincible. Dean had stood at the door to their bedroom and watched him pack. He hadn't said a word, but the look on his face spoke volumes. Dad had shouted and screamed and Sam, to be honest, had done his own fair share of both of those as well, but Dean . . . Dean had been silent.
As Sam picked up his bag and turned for the door, he could see exactly what terrified Dean the most.
