"But you love her?" Joan asked Adam. She was almost afraid to hear the answer. Part of her was certain Adam would say yes, but the other part wasn't so sure.

"I.. I like her a lot.." Adam said. Joan held in a sigh of relief.

"And you want me to like her too?" she questioned.

"No. I want you to like me," Adam told her. Joan was silent. She -did- like him. She more than liked him. He knew that. Right?

"Adam, I don't just like you," Joan told him.

"Yeah. Yeah, me too," Adam told her, putting her slipper back on her foot. "Good night Jane." Joan watched him head for the door.

"Adam, wait," Joan said, getting up and hobbling into the living room. When she reached it she saw Adam standing by the door. She hobbled over to him.

"How does this work?" she asked him.

"I don't know Jane. I like Iris, but... I more than like you. But you're not ready to couple. And I'm fine with that," Adam told her, opening the door and stepping out into the pouring rain.

"Adam!" Joan called after him, grabbing her crutches and following him out into the front yard. She went over to him and planted herself right in front of him.

"I know I'm too late. You're with Iris now, but... I love you Adam," she told him. Adam was silent for a moment.

"I love you too Jane," he told her. Then like at the science fair, just a little more awkward considering Joan was on crutches, they kissed. And instead of feathers falling this time, it was rain.

"I should get going," Adam told Joan when they broke their kiss.

"Right. Me too. I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Cha," Adam told her, then headed down the street. Joan hobbled back into the house and closed the door, then took a seat on the stairs. The fact that she was drenched didn't matter, the simple fact that she was Jane, and that she and Adam loved each other was the only thing on her mind. A smile formed on Joan's lips.

"I've never loved the rain so much," she said to no one.
