John stood on the edge of a cliff. He watched as the sun set over the lush, green trees of the forest below. The once blue sky had turned pink and orange, the clouds floated above him, slow and calm. A soft breeze blew past, making the grass sway and shine in the evening sun.
To his left, a big oak tree stood a lone. Its ancient branches held hundreds of tiny leaves and a couple of birds sat together. One of the bird's head gently settled on top of the other's.
John looked back at the sky, see that the fist stars had made an appearance in the dark blue sky.
Only then was he reminded of her. The only woman to capture his heart and soul. She had chsen him and had seen the man behind the mask of indifference. She had looked beyond the soldier and saw the human within, even though he hadn't. She had helped him see the world differently. They way she did.
But she was gone.
And a part of him had gone with her. He felt nearly nothing. He was back to square one, back to the mask and was now paying the price. He wanted- no, needed -to be seen as a man again. Not just some machine that can obey orders.
John saw more stars make themselves known. Here, he felt he could be a man. A man that could express himself without being judged by someone else. He was a Spartan. He wasn't supposed to feel or have his own opinion. He was viewed as a mindless machine, a tool that could be thrown away once he could be of no more use. He told himself that this was normal, that this was to be expected of others. THey didn't understand. How could they? But when he thought of her, the illusion meant nothing. She had shown him what it was like, to not have every move you make judged. To feel free. With her he was... Happy. He felt he could be himself.
But not anymore. Or ever again.
Now he had to plaster a fake expression on his face. He had to pretend that he was made of stone, expression never changing and no one ever understanding or seeing the emotion behind it.
This was how he was supposed to live his life. Cortana was only a small ray of sunshine of the ever present darkness.
Author's note!
Well! I got bored and so I got the idea of writing this. I may make some more chapters later. This could be my 'I'm bored so I decided to write group of one-shots...' Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this and I may 'see' you soon.
Please leave a comment (Preferably a productive one) and Critisism is welcomed! :D
By the way, I do tend to listen to music while I write to sort of set the tone alittle... For this one, I was listening to Made of stone by Daughter (Hence the name :D)
Anyways, I shall leave you to ponder other fandoms or other Halo Fanfiction!
