Gun jam
A/N: What if what happened in the season finale, Heartfelt Passages, didn't happen?
The gun didn't go off. Mike was able to wrestle it out the prison guard's possession and free his wife from his grip and knock him out. When Gary Munson was incapacitated, Mike grabbed the gun and quickly emptied its mag and the bullet in the chamber before handcuffing him as Olivia Benson returned.
"Everything's under control now," Mike explained.

"…They say the gun jammed," Carisi said; he had been informed by Benson that Gary's gun had miraculously malfunctioned when Mike wrestled it away from. "It was a close call."
"Very close call," added Rollins, just as Mike, picking up his box of possessions stepped out of Benson's office. "You were lucky, Dodds."
"Not really how I expected to spend my last day here at SVU," he expressed, "but at least we got Munson before he went too far."
"See you around, Dodds," said Fin.
"Good luck with the task force," added Benson.
Mike nodded…and walked towards his next position in his life as a police officer.
