The Other Star

by Running Out of Ink

400 years ago there was a Star. She wasn't particularly special in any way, there was no grand destiny set out for her. Fate did not play a hand in her falling, she just fell one day. Was sent shooting towards earth at record speed, the first star to fall in years. Her fellow stars watched in horror as she rocketed into the atmosphere. They prayed she would land safely, that she could find a way back to her home in the sky.

The Star herself was not particularly smart and, like most other stars, was very trusting. She hit the earth, a crater forming around her celestial body. She awoke at a later time and found herself surrounded. Three old women, they looked harmless. They told her sweet stories, they comforted her; they told her that they would help her get home.

They took her to their house, warming her with food and care, until the Star was glowing with happiness. They fed her sweets and bathed her. Her heart was full of joy. She was comfortable. She felt at home. Eventually, the three women coaxed her up a staircase. The animals in the room all squealed and growled in warning. Birds twittered in fright, and the dogs pawed at the locks. One of the old women glared toward the cages, silencing the animals, as she led the innocent star towards the top. At the end of the staircase there was a stone table. Now, remember how I said the Star was not particularly smart? Well, what kind of person would walk into an unfamiliar house with three old hags and lay on a stone table?

Surely she must have known something was wrong. Alas, the poor Star did not realize her mistake until she saw the light glinting off the knife. The knife, which resembles a shard of glass, glided through the air, arching down towards her chest.

Her glow went out, terror striking her heart. She went cold all over. And then she knew no more. The three old women, the Lilim, laughed and joked as they feasted on her heart.

They put away bits into a box to save for later. Conserving their only supply of youth and beauty until another star fell.
