Equal
South never hated her brother.
Despite what one might believe, she was actually rather fond of him. After all, he was her brother, her twin, her second half. Sure, they bickered, fought, went days without speaking to one another. But he was her brother, and she loved him to the very best of her ability.
Of course, she was jealous. North had always been more; More cautious, more confident. More in command. He'd always been faster, been stronger, been smarter. More and better. And South was too much; Too reckless, too stubborn, too arrogant. She wasn't patient enough, wasn't subtle enough, wasn't prepared enough. Too much, but somehow never quite enough.
And she resented that, she did. She wanted to prove herself, prove that she was just as good at everything as he was. She wanted to show that she could be subtle, could be careful, could be confident. But she could never quite live up to her brother's example, and she hated it. She didn't hate him. It wasn't his fault, wasn't his failing. He was just naturally better, and that was something he couldn't help. But she could try to catch up, and she knew she couldn't be far behind.
And then.
Then came Theta.
Theta was the breaking point. The last straw. The final rejection.
Theta was a message, and he was a message that came through loud and clear: It wasn't just that she wasn't enough.
It was that she would never be enough.
And that's why things changed.
Why things ended.
Why they broke.
South never hated her brother, not even to the end. She loved him to the very best of her ability. She didn't need to be better than him. It would have been enough to be his partner. His colleague.
His equal.
But they took that chance away from her, forever. And that?
That was why she killed him.
