Really short oneshot in honor of Robin's birthday. Remember season 2, episode 12 "A Good Day to Die"? :) Guy walks into Marian's room and mentions the date and that it is Robin's birthday. So when I realized it was today, I couldn't resist. Here ya go! I'm sort of making up the ages here, but it's set when Marian is 15 and Robin has just turned 18.
"Happy birthday, Robin." Marian tucked her hair smoothly behind her ear and gave him her biggest smile as she watched him open his present. She hooked her hands behind her back, dancing with nervousness and hopeful that he'd like it.
Robin laughed as he pushed back the wrapping to reveal a box of homemade pies next to a handkerchief in colors of the woods––a swirl of dark greens and shades of brown with an intricate leaf design woven into it. "Marian, this is the perfect gift! You always know just what to get a person, don't you?" He looked up and smiled, leaning against the fence near the front yard of his house.
Upon discovering a few months ago that Robin had a certain strong love for apple pie––and that they were hard to come by for his family––Marian had known this would be the perfect gift, and when his birthday neared she'd baked a half dozen. As for the handkerchief, he often complained about how he couldn't use his handkerchiefs in the woods if he as hunting, because they never blended in. So the camouflage handkerchief was a sort of inside joke. It had taken a good deal of time and work, but Marian was pretty pleased with how it had turned out.
"I'm glad you like them," she said, speaking up now, her heart pounding. What she was about to do now was risky. And maybe Robin would be upset at her. But it didn't matter, she had to do it, just this once. Today. It was his birthday, after all.
"Are you all right? You look pale." Robin squinted at her.
"I'm fine. Robin, I have another present for you," Marian said in a strangled voice.
"Another?" He laughed, a grin lighting up his face as he shook his head at her. "I don't see how it could get any better than this."
"You might not like it." Marian looked down. "But I thought it would be fitting, since it's your birthday and all."
Robin looked at her, confused. "Marian? What exactly do you mean? I don't think I'm getting whatever you're talking about––"
He was interrupted as Marian took a quick step forward, stood up on tiptoe, and kissed him briefly on the lips, a blush brightening her cheeks. She pulled away quickly, muttering something unintelligible, and pushed the fence open, departing at a fast pace. She couldn't believe she'd actually gone through with it, after all the other time she'd wished to do such a thing.
Meanwhile, Robin stood by himself in his yard, watching her slim figure head off, and feeling rather dazed. He'd always secretly liked Marian, but had been afraid she didn't return his feelings. Now––now she'd kissed him. For the first time. She liked him. And he liked her! She'd given him the best gift ever.
He couldn't help thinking that, contradictory to what he'd said, it had been possible for his birthday to get better.
Short, I know, but I whipped it up in fifteen minutes' time this morning because I wanted to have it up today. Hope it was cute and enjoyable. =) Please review, I loooove to get feedback!
