You and me, we used to be together. Every day, together. Always

Severus knew the reason he and Lily had not been spending much time together lately was because she disapproved of his interest in the Dark Arts. Every since Avery had drawn that Dark Mark on Severus' arm, she had been avoiding him.

I really feel that I'm losing my best friend. I can't believe this could be the end.

Lily sighed at her homework. She just couldn't concentrate. She wanted to make up with Sev - she just couldn't bear the thought of losing him to the Death Eaters. If he became one of them, it was pretty much impossible that he would survive more thana few years with them.

It looks as though you're letting go, and if it's real, well, I don't want to know...

When he uttered that disgusting, horrible word, and saw her flee, he knew that he had blown every chance he ever had with her.

Don't speak: I know just what you're saying, so please stop explaining. Don't tell me 'cause it hurts.

He had tried to apologise - tried to put things right. But she knew that she couldn't even listen to his apologies, let alone forgive him.

Don't speak: I know what you're thinking, and I don't need your reasons. Don't tell me 'cause it hurts.

She had tried to explain why she couldn't be around him any more, but he didn't want to hear it. He knew why she wouldn't forgive him.

Our memories; they can be inviting, but some are alltogether mighty frightening...

Severus stared at the morning paper. James had done it. He had married her. And he had said no to the Dark Lord. Severus held back his tears. He knew that saying no to the Dark Lord was deadly. He got up and went straight to Dumbledore to beg him for protection for his precious Lily.

As we die, both you and I, with my head in my hands, I sit and cry...

As Severus held his love, he finally let the tears come out. Lily was dead, and a piece of Severus had died with her.

Don't speak: I know just what you're saying, so please stop explaining. Don't tell me 'cause it hurts.

Severus couldn't listen to Dumbledore try to comfort him. Dumbledore was the one who could have stopped this.

Don't speak: I know what you're thinking, and I don't need your reasons. Don't tell me 'cause it hurts.

Dumbledore was trying to explain why he didn't think James and Lily needed more protection, but Severus wouldn't listen.

It's all ending. I've gotta stop pretending who we are.

Finally, Severus found it in himself, not to forgive Dumbledore, but to work alongside him. He realised that anything he could do to stop the Dark Lord from returning would keep Lily's memory - and her son - alive. Those eyes... The ones that would haunt him all his life.

You and me, I can see us dying. Are we?

As Severus lay, blood seeping out of his throat, all he could think of was seeing Lily again. He called Harry over and looked into his eyes. Her eyes.

Don't speak: I know just what you're saying so please stop explaining. Don't tell me 'cause it hurts.

Severus finally saw her, and a long-lost smile brightened his face once more. He went to apologise for all those years ago, but she put a finger to his lips."I know," she whispered, a single tear escaping from her haunting eyes.

Don't speak: I know what you're thinking, and I don't need your reasons. Don't tell me 'cause it hurts.

She went to apologise for not forgiving him, but he silenced her. "I know," he whispered before pulling her into a long-waited embrace.
