It was not supposed to be public [or private] knowledge. No one was supposed to even notice. She hadn't. At least, not for a long while. It had started when she moved to queens. At first she thought it was just a weird phase. Perhaps even self-medicating. It made her feel happy and it was a fun, inexpensive habit. It's not like it was drugs or anything. Slowly, her obsession grew until it was a daily ritual and her dresser showed it. It was absolutely covered with the paraphernalia and every night after homework, not matter how late, she would complete the cycle. Remove, repair, and repaint. That is right Casey had a nail polish obsession. She changed the color daily. The girls in class always commented on how well coordinated her outfit and nails were. They thought she simply was a little (lot) obsessive with matching her nails and clothes. She knew better. However, she wasn't the only one to figure it out. Her ex-new-best friend had caught on. If only Eva was not friends with Derek as well… then she never would have seen the connection. It really wasn't that big of a deal… In their forced truce through cohabitation, She noticed the color of his shirt. And so what if when she painted her nails to match his clothes? It helped her to remember the next day that that threat friendly boy in the orange shirt (or whatever his shirt the previous day was) was really a diabolical fiend just waiting for her vigilance to drop. Surely, the reason was of a precautionary nature rather than a trigger to remember warm eyes and quick smiles. It was only to help keep her aware of the enemy. Right. Besides, Eva didn't know what she was talking about when she said Casey was as subtle as a board to the back of the head; that this was obviously a plea for attention from Derek- That she wanted Derek to notice, that she wanted Derek to know, that she wanted Derek. Eva was definitely not her new best friend, she definitely did not want Derek, she definitely did not have this weird desireto color coordinate with him on the same day, and she definitely was not thrilled when he [finally] asked her about her "crazy, obsessive need to color coordinate," and she definitely did not tell him the truth.
