Fullmetal Drama!

Part 2

Winry recoiled sharply as she hit the ground with a thud, promptly knocking every last breath of air from her lungs. She kneeled there for a few minutes, gasping for breath and staring intently at the ground. Even in her oxygen-starved state, Winry was still a mechanic to the core, and this ground was made of metal. As soon as she had regained enough breath to move around, she got to her feet and looked around. On closer inspection, the ground revealed itself to be millions of metal sheets about the size of her hand that were all nailed together with such skill that she could hardly see the tiny, gleaming nails. Finally Winry straightened and looked at her surroundings properly. That was when the you-know-what hit the fan.

Winry was standing in the middle of a metal field that was enclosed on all sides by metal walls. The walls were composed of glowing gold bricks held together by shiny cement the colour of chrome. The whole sight, although fascinating, almost blinded Winry with its sparkling metals. Until now, Winry had conveniently been able to overlook the fact that she was not in Resembool anymore, but as she stood looking towards the looming, fantastical walls that caged her in the realisation finally hit her and she fell to her knees in a daze. She was not there, and here was unknown, so how could she be anywhere? What if she didn't exist anymore? And Ed...where was he?

Of course Winry had known Ed was going to be home that day. Ed wasn't particularly good at keeping secrets from her, and the last time they had talked, he had seemed very shifty about coming home. So, Winry had gone about her daily tasks cheerfully while surrepticiously making sure everything looked neat and spotless. She wanted Ed to know that she didn't mind terribly when that he was gone. But she did. Winry missed Ed so much it made her go all the way to the station to catch a train to where he was before the voice of reason turned her back towards home. However, this was a fact that she would never share with him.

And so, when Ed came home, Winry pretended she hadn't seen him go in and made sure he had enough time to think up a surprise for her before she came back in. That was when the flame had grabbed her and brought her here. Well... thought Winry. I suppose He'll realise soon. Hopefully before I die of starvation in this paradisian hell. Figuring that she should at least try to find a way out of this box, Winry walked over to one of the walls. She sniffed the metal of the bricks and their cement. Then, making sure no one was watching (who would be?) she licked, rubbed, and listened to the surface of the brick. This was a little ritual that, however embarrassing and depraved it looked, always helped Winry find out what metal she was working with if she didn't know at first.

Carefully tapping the surface of the wall, Winry frowned. This wall was a light copper alloy coated in gold. That much she could tell, but copper alloys were usually hollow. With a bubble of hope rising up inside her Winry gripped the brick around it's slippery, smooth edges. If she did this then it should...the brick slipped and suddenly Winry's arms suck through the other side of the wall. Lowering her head to the gap in the almost paper-thin wall, Winry gaped. Then her brain was whirling and tumbling somersaults and she collapsed against the wall, out cold.
