HIS REASON TO BREATHE

Dean sat on the edge of the cliff looking down at the beach way below. He sighed and wasn't surprised at all when the thought of letting himself fall ran through his mind.

Most people who saw even one of the things that he had seen in his lifetime would have gone out a long time ago or be locked in a padded cell drooling. He had seen too many horrors, lost too many people he cared about and he had barely passed thirty.

He thought about everything that he killed if he ever had to go to trial he would face the death penalty or an infinity of life sentences depending on what state he was in at the time.

He thought about all his injuries and how all too soon they would be catching up with him.

He had survived so much faced angels and demons. Saved the ungrateful world more than once and no one knew who Dean Winchester really was, they didn't know or care that after nearly thirty years he still missed his mom.

He had been ripped apart by hell hounds gone to hell and back, well sometimes like now he wondered if he had ever escaped hell.

He would never have a family, no one to teach to work on the Impala, no one to say 'honey I'm home' to because no matter how hard this life was it was all that he knew. As long as evil lived he had to kill it, it was in his blood and he knew that when death finally claimed him for good that he would go out facing something supernatural. Well unless he accidentally slipped off the cliff right now. It would be so easy. He closed his eyes.

A gently touch on his shoulder and he took a deep breath.

"It's time to go Dean." Sam said softly.

"Yeah ok." Dean said. He stood slowly and faced his little brother and the guilt of what he been thinking tugged at his gut. He gave Sam his usual cocky smile and had the mask back in place in seconds.

Sam smiled back and they began to walk to the Impala together, keeping a perfect stride.

Sam stopped and turned to look at Dean. "I'm here dude you know that right?"

"I know Sammy." Dean answered keeping his eyes locked on his little brother's because looking away would be wrong. "Thanks."

"Why are you thanking me? It's my job." Sam grinned.

"Touché little brother." Dean smiled sincerely.

They reached the Impala and Sam got in first, Dean stood and stared back at the cliff. He sighed and joined his brother.

His reason for breathing.
