The end but not for all

Severus was laying on the ground with blood pouring from his head when she dragged herself into the small, dark room. They had fought on the same side, yet the last thing she had said to him had been the worst she had said to anyone. Everyone assumed she was dead, and looking at Severus they would probably have assumed the same about him. Only one thing made her certain he was alive and that was the fresh trail of tears running down his cheeks. She dragged her body over to him and croaked, "Severus?"

He tried to move his head to look at her but she moved herself instead so as not to increase his pain any further.

"Are you okay?" she asked him as she gently wiped away his tears.

"I…I…I think so…" he said shakily, "Just m…my h…head h…hurts…"

"Looks like you've lost a lot of blood. I'd take you to St Mungo's if they didn't think I was dead."

"What h…happened?" he asked suddenly looking scared of something she couldn't quite put her finger on.

"The Dark Lord died…. Bellatrix died… Greyback's body was found but I don't know who killed him… Remus…" she stopped in mid-sentence as a fresh wave of tears filled her eyes. Severus did something he'd never done before. He grabbed her hand and pulled her closer to him.

"But at least h…he's n…not in p…pain," he said trying to comfort her as much as possible.

"I guess…" she replied sniffing. She buried her head in his robes and wept for the man she loved and Severus even felt a pang of hurt. After everything Remus had done to him if he was what made Tonks happy then he was willing to tolerate his presence and seeing her like this made him realise just how much she'd loved Remus. But all he could do was hold her close and let her cry.

After a while her tears slowly ceased to the occasional whimper and he stroked the back of her head lovingly. She looked up at him and said, "At least he's not in pain."

"Yeah…" Severus replied, his head still throbbing and his vision blurry.

"I'll do what I can for your cuts. It won't be the best healing in the world but if I don't do something soon you're going to die of blood loss." With that she busied herself healing his cuts and slowly his vision became less blurred and he was able to sit up.

"Thanks Tonks," he said, hugging her.

"Didn't think you liked hugs!" she said, smiling at him.

"I believe it is acceptable in some circumstances! You did just save my life after all!"

"True, true!" she replied and hugged him tighter.

"I said hugging was acceptable but strangling isn't!"

"Sorry Sev!" she replied and loosened her grip a bit.

"That's better! So… did Harry survive?"

"Yes he did! He's fine! A little overwhelmed by everything and upset because people have died but in general he's ok," she smiled at him and he smiled back. For the first time in his life he didn't feel alone. He felt loved and cared about and he was finally in the arms of the woman he loved. Nymphadora Tonks, auror extraordinaire, prefers to be known as Tonks only. He smiled as he remembered the first time they had met and she'd tripped over the rug in his classroom. Instant detention and that had been how it had stayed until then. Suddenly she spoke interrupting his thoughts.

"So what are we going to do then? I mean everyone thinks we're dead so we cant just appear in front of them!"

"Find a house in the country where they'd never think of looking for two dead people I guess," he replied.

"You really think you could put up with me?"

"No but I'll do my best!" he replied laughing and they disapparated together, landing in a nice house in the countryside, miles away from anyone else.
