"Doctor, do you happen to have a plan?" Romana huffed as she trudged along beside him. Their feet sank into the damp ground as they walked along, making their presence known. She shivered as the chill in the air stung her face, only adding to her discomfort about heading off to be sacrificed to the Rain Gods.
"Why do I have to have a plan? You could have a plan too you know!"
"Oh really? I believe it was you who accidentally landed us on this planet, where we're being sacrificed to the bloody Rain Gods!" She yelled, crossing her arms and giving him her I'm not amused look.
One of their 'escorts' turned around to see what all the commotion was about, so the Doctor flashed him one of his winning smiles. The man rolled his eyes and turned away once again. Romana elbowed him in the side as a final warning.
"Alright, alright," he whispered, "We'll distract them with something before they have the chance to actually sacrifice us, then when they're not paying attention we'll run back to the TARDIS."
"That's not exactly what I meant by 'plan' Doctor," she remarked.
"Well it's a start!" He threw up his hands in exasperation. "Do you smell something?"
She shook her head and shrugged, "Why are they sacrificing us of all people anyway?" She asked.
"It appeases their Rain Gods' wrath. It's also quite good for the plant life as well," he joked.
"Oh good, that makes me feel so much better about being burned alive."
"Just look on the bright side Romana!" He said, putting his arm around her.
A crack of thunder sounded above, causing Romana and a few of the other men to jump.
"Aha!" The Doctor yelled, leaning his head back and gazing up at the dark sky.
"If there are any Rain Gods up there, you're absolute rubbish! Feel free to strike me down if I'm wrong!" He yelled.
"What in the name of Rassilon are you doing?" She asked, shamelessly using one of his phrases.
"Oh you know, just smelling the ozone. Romana get down!"
He gave her a light push on the shoulder and the both tumbled down into the mud. There was another loud peal of thunder, followed by flashes of lightning across the sky. The Doctor pulled an umbrella out of his over sized pocket just as the rain began to pour. They stood up abruptly and looked around at their dazed captors.
"Romana, I think now would be the time to run," he said with a smile. She giggled in response and followed closely behind him as they ran back to the TARDIS.
Shortly after their great escape, the Doctor and Romana were safe in bed, cuddling under a blanket and sipping some hot tea.
"Honestly Doctor that was some plan."
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"Doctor, all you really did was hope for lightning!" She said accusingly.
"Well we made it didn't we? Besides, I knew something would come up. We always get out of it somehow!" He said defensively.
"Oh I'm sure you did." Her voice was oozing with sarcasm.
She nuzzled his shoulder lovingly. She could joke about it all she wanted, but she really was glad they'd both been unharmed. He kissed the top of her head and rubbed her back. They spent the rest of the night snuggled together, reminiscing about their encounter.
