The Vates
The assembled legion roared their cheers, their approval, of the new Vates. A new Vates, a new prophetess to guide them with the words of the Roman gods themselves. The third part of the Triumvirate, once she reached the age of fifteen of course, to help guide them alongside the Praetors, of which there were two. Now however the youngling was only six, far from really accepting the duties of Vates. Her name was Gwendolyn.
Gwendolyn stood upon a high stage in front of the Arcem's inhabitants. She was scared, very scared. All she knew was that Mommy's old boyfriend she had been told about came back, calling himself Apollo and calling her older sister Daphne(who was eleven then) his daughter. He told her mommy that Daphne needed to come to some place called the Arcem. That was just over a year ago. A week ago, Apollo came back. Gwendolyn ran up to him, because he was so kind to her when she was younger. She liked him better than her stepdad, Sam who was always gone anyway. She hugged him around the knees, asking where Daphne was? Was she coming home to see her? Did she miss her? He smiled sadly at her, then slowly peeled her off his legs and went to her Mommy. Mommy opened her mouth to ask, too, but all Apollo did was hold up a pink be-stickered notebook. Gwendolyn knew it. It was Daphne's song book. She always had it. Why did she not?
A warm voice in the back of her head whispered to her. "I'm sorry little one. But you know why don't you?" Yes, she knew why… without knowing why she opened her mouth, and asked in a shaking voice. "She's dead isn't she? Daphne's dead isn't she?" She started crying, tears streaming down her face. Her Mommy picked her up, settling her in her lap. "What? Why do you say that, Gwen?"
Then Mommy looked to Apollo. "No… It can't be!"
He nodded very small like he didn't believe it himself. "I'm sorry. But she has been chosen." That didn't make sense to Gwendolyn. If Daphne was dead, how was she chosen for anything? Her Mommy seemed to understand it though. And Gwendolyn understood it was something that made Mommy very sad. Apollo stood, hugged her mother, and then patted her on the head with his soft, citrus smelling, hand. And then he left the crying Gwendolyn and, her trying to be strong for her daughter, mother.
Yester day he had come back. Come back and talked to first her Mommy, and then Gwendolyn, about the place where her sister had gone. He was saying that it was urgent Gwendolyn went, too. He said it was a stronghold for the people who were half-god half-human. He said she was special, that one day she would be very important. She asked if she could see her mommy and he said yes. So the she came to be on this stage of polished marble, surrounded by to tough looking warriors, one a boy under his helmet, one a girl. And She still was confused. And Missing Daphne...
So to explain this, I am about to start on a new story, yes I know I should be updating the hunter, but this is the introduction for one of the Characters.
