Within his comfortable surroundings of his lab, Gibson sat on his chair. Spinning around mindlessly as he wondered how his teammates were doing. A candle was lit on his desk, giving a warming glow on his lab.
Outside of his lab Gibson could hear his comrades chattering happily, talking about today's events. About how great the day went and that everything went according to plan. Gibson could hear his green (friend?) companion laughing in joy.
Even Mandarin, their own leader who never praised anyone on the team was proud.
"Hey Brainiac!" a voice suddenly shouted from behind.
Gibson made a grunt noise and raised his head to meet his red teammate.
"We're going down to the city to get something to eat, you coming?" Sprx asked, putting his arm into the wall for support and leaned against it, he looked around the lab, taking in the different amount of chemicals and test-tubes.
The blue monkey shook his head. "My apologies Sprx, but I am not going to join you today." He said politely, he turned around again to scribble something down on his paper. "I have projects to finish."
The pilot rolled his eyes. Opening his mouth halfway. Was he hesitating to talk further?
Interesting. The pilot of this team was one to talk before to think.
This was unusual for him.
"When do you even do join us?" he suddenly snarled, and glared at his ally. "You know every time you do this, every time you hide in here to experiment on something stupid or whatever you do here, Otto only gets more and more upset with you?"
The words stabbed though the blue monkeys heart.
Why was his green companion always trying to get him out of his lab was still a mystery to him.
There was no way they were friends, yet Otto always tried his best. Did Sprx notice it? Since when?
Gibson sighed.
"Sprx, you and I both know my experiments are for helping this place to keep running, Otto doesn't realize-"
"So you're not going with us again?" The pilot interrupted and looked to the hallway. Avoiding to look into Gibson's black orbs.
"No, I'm not." Gibson left his answer at that.
Sprx grinded his teeth. "You know what, why don't you stay here? It's not like any of the others would care!"
Before Gibson could even reply Sprx was already stomping out.
Sheesh, what was his deal anyways?
It's not like Sprx or any of his teammates were family or friends. They were teammates who only fought alongside each other against any treat to this planet, they had nothing in common except their looks. There was no use in eating breakfast together, there was no point to celebrate-
…
The candle was still flickering in the dark lab.
Gibson gave a glance at the carvings.
'Merry Christmas' was carved into it.
His teammates didn't even know what Christmas was. When he asked they didn't even give him time to explain. Complaning about having another lecture and just walking away.
Gibson didn't try to explain it again.
This whole world doesn't even know about the holiday.
He was alone on this day.
But he was used to this right?
…
Then why did he feel like he should've gone with them? His teammates were long gone by now.
T-They weren't his friends. They just weren't.
…
His friends were still on Mobius. Far, far away from here.
He choked back a sob.
Christmas was a time to be with one other, to eat and feast on the wonders of the year. To celebrate it with family or friends.
He had none now. Gibson realized that 3 years ago when he joined this dysfunctional team.
He had no idea who his real family was.
His friends on his former home too so far away.
Gibson raised his trembling hand behind the candle and blew it out gently. Tears were now streaming on his blue cheeks.
Merry Christmas to me.
The lab felt cold.
