Finn and Quinn shopping for prom.

He never noticed their names rhymed until now.

It kind of annoys him.

Like their names will only ever be a cheap slogan.

And that other word….prom.

If he had a dollar for every time she'd said it in the last two weeks…

Prom. Short for promenade.

prom·e·nade [prom-uh-neyd, -nahd]

noun, verb, -nad·ed, -nad·ing.

noun

1.

a stroll or walk, especially in a public place, as for pleasure or display.

Bored in English class he had looked it up in the dictionary.

The "for display" part punched him in the gut.

He wasn't even sure why he looked up the definition of prom.

He never looked at dictionaries to explain words he didn't know.

And for a fleeting moment he realized why.

Rachel used to.

Dress.

She meant a pastel, poufy skirt thing.

She's convinced him it's a key part to winning.

You must "dress for success" she tells him.

More like "dress up" he thinks.

Which also makes him think of costumes and acting and pretending.

For some reason musical theatre comes to mind.

Which makes him think of Broadway.

Which reminds him of…

Shit Hudson – focus.

On anything but her.

Shoes.

She found a dress.

Now they're on to shoes.

He thinks he's clever when he says "we're a shoe in for king and queen" when she asks his opinion on the fifteenth pair.

She narrows her icy blue eyes.

Apparently she doesn't think he's clever.

Of course, she never really did.

And for fifteenth time today he misses Rachel.

For one, her big brown eyes were always wide and warm when she looked at him.

And she always thought he was clever.

He learned a new word today.

Tiara.

Tee-are-ah.

She's admiring some tee-are-ah's in a shop window.

Her eyes sparkle like the fake diamonds glittering under the window lights.

Fake.

Why does that word make him want to barf?

Tiara. Fancy word for crown if you ask him.

Crowns. Makes him think of gold.

Like gold stars.

He still wants to throw up.

Second new word of the day – clutch.

Well he knows what the word clutch means.

She tells him it's also a type of purse.

He wants to ask – "don't purses have straps?"

And "what's the difference between a clutch a really big wallet?"

But he can't bring himself to actually care that much.

He thinks of the other definitions of clutch.

Like a truck clutch.

Or to hold something tight.

Like Rachel's hand at the carnival last summer.

She hated that super fast swinging ride.

He loved how important she made him feel.

Like he kept her from falling and spinning out of control.

He remembers how everything blurred around them.

And how they held on and anchored each other.

His chest tightens at the memory.

It clutches at his heart.
