WARNING: Spoilers for season 8 finale "Sacrifice".

Author's Note: This is from Dean's POV during the bar scene between he and Cas in 8X23 "Sacrifice". In my opinion, Dean's choice of comparison between E.T. and Cas was his way of showing he was sad.

Disclaimer: I don't own Supernatural.

The sense of calm was unsettling as Dean sat at the bar next to Castiel and took another swig from his free beer.

Here they were, waiting for a cupid to show up so they could complete another trial to seal Heaven, while Sam was off working to seal Hell, and Cas was sitting there awaiting what would likely be the end of his life.

And yet the two men were drinking beers like it was any old Wednesday evening…

He listened as Cas stated plainly the likelihood that his fellow angels would kill him after he locked himself in Heaven with them. And Dean felt wrong just sitting there hearing those words.

He wanted to do something to show his friend that the idea of losing him was actually breaking him inside. That his "I'm pissed at you" demeanor was mostly for show, and deep down he was just hurting at the prospect of losing another person from his life.

Not just any person, either, but the angel who had saved his soul and fought alongside him more times than he could count.

Castiel, the one who had screwed up but always did his best to make amends.

Cas, his best friend.

But Dean Winchester was never one for sappy displays of emotion, so instead the words that came from his mouth were, "So this is it, huh? E.T. goes home…"

Cas gave him his trademark 'I don't understand that reference' look, and Dean rolled his eyes.

Because honestly, he wished for once that Cas did get the reference.

If he knew that what Dean was really saying with those words was that he felt like he was losing a friend he had grown to consider as family- who had taught him so much, and given him so much, and had become a sort of touchstone for Dean…

That if he wasn't so damn determined to remain stoic about everything, he might cry just like he did when he was little and watched E.T. get on his ship to leave Elliot forever…

Dean silently cursed himself for not being able to just spit out the words he wanted to say the most.

For not being able to say, "I'm going to miss you, and I sure as hell don't want you to die."

Instead, Dean sat there drinking more beer, his face a perfect mask of calm and collected, not betraying for an instant the pain he felt inside at knowing his best friend was probably doomed.
