Chapter I: A New Team
Part I: Alessandra Kendall

Alessandra Kendall stood in the doorway of her apartment, glaring at the dark blue car that had just pulled into the parking space right in front of her door. The raven haired young woman couldn't believe her parents had found the apartment she'd rented on the opposite coast from them. If they'd found her, then there was only one reason that they were there, and she hated the thought that they were trying to convince her to follow in their footsteps yet again and become a superhero instead of studying something that she was passionate about, cryptography.

"I don't have time for this, Mother." She glared at the woman whom had just gotten out of the car, not believing that anyone could think they were remotely related. Despite having the same heart shaped face and high cheekbones, Alessandra thought that she looked more like her father. After all, she had Mathias' wavy, black hair that bordered on being curly instead of Eleanor's pin straight, strawberry blond hair, and his round, mahogany eyes instead of her light green eyes. The only thing she believed she had gotten from her mother was a strong determination to chase after her dreams. "I've got a lot homework to get done tonight, so please don't think about setting me up with anyone or try and convince me be a superhero. I just don't have the time."

"Alessandra, sweetheart," Eleanor smiled, "Your father and I just want you to be a superhero, like we are."

"That is exactly my point, Mother." She wished she could turn and walk back inside the apartment, so she didn't have to deal with the direction the conversation was headed. "I chose college and working two jobs precisely because I don't want to be a superhero. I really don't enjoy running around wearing masks and spandex every minute of the day; I just want a normal job where I don't have to to put my family in danger, or have to move every couple of years because some villain tracked us down."

"Since when is being normal what you want, Alessandra?"

"I've always wanted to be normal, Mother. If you even had any ideas about what I truly like, then you'd realize that I'm actually good cryptography and puzzles." She folded her arms across her chest. "All I have ever wanted was not to be looked at crosswise by the other kids in school because of the powers that I inherited from you and Father. Powers that I don't even wish to have. I wish you and Father well, but please don't ever try and contact me again. Goodbye."

Tears began to trickle down her cheeks as she turned away from her mother. She hadn't intended to be so brutal when cutting her parents out of her life, but she needed to live her own life instead of the life her parents wanted her to live and if that meant any children she one day had would never know their grandparents, then that was something she'd have to live with after she somebody special in her life. Maybe it was the person who'd come to her in her dreams. The one she couldn't see what they looked like, but she got the distinct impression of someone that truly cared about her and loved her for all her faults.

Running into the apartment and into her bedroom, she flopped on the bright purple and gold colored comforter on her bed and buried her face into the pillow. If her roommate were home, then she knew that she would be sitting on the bed, trying to get Alessandra to talk about everything with her mother, but no. Spencer Robertson had to run some errands after class and wouldn't be returning before Alessandra left for the library.

And I did tell Mother the truth. I have a ton of homework to complete tonight. If I want to earn that Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, and the one in Computer Science, I have to stay on top of it. Which is why I never told her I was attending the university here.

Alessandra grabbed the paperwork on her nightstand and and glanced at it. She had always known that she would be working extremely hard just to make it in school, especially since she was double majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science, but was she really prepared for working this hard? Working two jobs to support herself, and still manage to stay on top of her school work? She still wasn't sure how she was going to do it, but she she knew she was going to do so somehow. What did she really want to do with her life, and how did the person in her dreams figure into whatever her life was going to become?
