I'm really nervous about this story and I hope it works out! Please tell me what you think of it! I know I'm not as good as Sarah J. Mass but I would like to make something good :) Thanks!
A thundering rumble shakes the trees and ground. Thorne and Henry gape at the dense forest before us. Dane whimpers and clutches my hand.
"I told you Rose, not to come here. Why did we have to?" She whispers. I roll my eyes and hide my own fear as I step forward.
"Relax Dane, we're not doing something wrong. The restricted area is still a mile away." I shrug her off, "And if you're so scared, maybe your shouldn't have come." I knew my words might've stung Dane, but I was too bothered and mad to care. "I came here to tell you guys something very important-" another loud noise rattled the trees and all the birds scattered. This one more intense. I hold my breath without even realising it. I eye Dane, now pale. She gets scared easily and when she does, she kind of goes crazy. This probably wasn't the best place to talk with her. A few silent moments pass and no sound comes, and I relax. Thorne grins shakily next to Dane. Henry looks concentrated, still staring at the forest. I shake my head and put a hand on Dane to calm her down.
Ever since the kingdom put restrictions on our little town, we're not allowed to leave. They bring all resources fully guarded and with battle horses. And that too is limited, Little food for each family. The rich people of our town now aren't so rich anymore. No luxury, they say we should be grateful we're alive. But why? And what are sounds coming from the forest every day and night? Like a war raging on between something deep in the woods. My friends and I sneak out every night and meet in a clearing only a mile away from the restricted area. They've never told us why they keep us this way, and we didn't bother to ask more than once. It was something they weren't going to say until it might be too late. But yesterday night, I had found out something terrifying…
"I-I think we should back away a little." Henry gulps. I nod and we slowly step back a few yards. I hesitate before addressing them.
"Henry, Dane, Thorne, I have something really important to say. Listen very carefully," their heads snap to me. I take a deep breath and begin. "The sounds coming from the woods, as we know is from something, but we don't know what. Until yesterday, I heard something but it doesn't have to be real." They gape at me. I divert my eyes, now wanting to say the next part. They're going to be laugh at me. I take another breath and steady myself.
"What is it Rose?" Thorne says cautiously. I open my mouth, but it's dry.
"They said the commotion was caused by...faes. Fae," I say slowly. I wait for their laughter but nothing comes. They just stare at me, dumbfounded.
"Did you just say...faes?" Henry shakes his head. I manage to nod. The alone thought of even one fae terrifies me. Faeries? Weren't those things just in tales? And yet those Guards who came yesterday said that.
"You mean the ones who kept humans slaves for thousands of years?" Thorne blinks slowly. "And how do you know that?"
"That's not actually true, is it?" Dane whispers.
"I heard it from the Guards yesterday when they came for the month's supplies. It might not even be true. It's probably just a rumor, I'm sure." I try to assure Dane. But just then, a horrifying darkness submerges around us.
