Polly and her friends passed me like I didn't exist. They were too busy talking to the new girl, Anya, to notice me. They were always too busy to notice me. Whether they were discussing their gorgeous boyfriends, or trying to win over another newbie to the dark side, they were always busy. Today, that newbie was Anya. She stole a glance in my direction as I walked alone through the hallways to lunch. No more boyfriend. He liked to cheat. No more best friends. One had moved, while the other was too much of a follower to give me a second glance when her best friend, the girl who hated me most, was around—which was all the time. I always walked alone now.
"I'll catch up to you guys later?" she said, as if questioning whether they would let her go.
"Yah, sure. Whatever. See ya around" Polly could care less.
I couldn't believe I cared what any of them were talking about, especially enough to listen. Then, she headed toward me.
"You're Britney, right?"
"Just Britt. It's Norwegian."
"I'm Anya."
"I know who you are."
"Polly and them sure can get annoying, huh?"
"I guess," I said, when in truth I wanted to be like them—have all the friends and attention.
"They told me about your breakup. I was wondering if there was anything I could do."
"It's not really your business."
"Maybe not, but either way I'd like to help."
"Cool necklace," I said trying to get her to stop talking about Edward. I could care less about what he did with Bella. Well, really, I couldn't care more, but I had to stop thinking about it. The necklace was simple. A shimmery glass piece with a make-shift shamrock cut out from the center.
"It's kind of like my good luck charm I guess. Been in my family forever."
"Huh," I said in thought. "Don't you have somewhere to be? I mean, not to sound rude, but…if Polly invites you anywhere, I'd accept that offer. She's kind of, well, the main inlet to friends around here."
"Not interested. I like people more who aren't really well.."
"You like losers, better. Well, thanks."
"Sorry, I'm starting off on the wrong foot. Here, why don't you take my necklace. You seem to need the luck more than I do."
"Thanks, but I don't want to take…"
"Oh go ahead. Look, do you wanna have lunch with me. You seem to be kind of friendless."
"Kind of? You don't know the start of it."
"Tell me."
"Look, I have a meeting I need to get to. Maybe some other time."
"Yah right."
"If you want to help me walk my dogs after school, maybe we can talk, but I really do have somewhere I need to be."
"K. After school at?"
"Let's say 5. Here's an address." I fished a pen out of my bag, and wrote my street and house down. "And a number in case you get lost." And I wrote down my cell. I really hoped she wouldn't convey the info to the populars.
"If I come, would you tell me what you're wishing for right now."
"I'm letting you come aren't I?"
"Please."
"Maybe."
