Eyes As Bright As Yours

I.
Caspian smells like salt-sea air and wine and sandalwood. Lucy shouldn't know this, but he stands too close sometimes, for too long.
II.
He has a deplorable habit of forgetting to knock. It used to be his cabin, after all.
Lucy brushes aside his apologies with a smile, sitting daintily on the bunk, her slender frame nestled inside his tunic. The walls seem to curve around her with an odd intimacy, as if she belongs here, in his quarters. He imagines, wistfully, coming home to this every day.
III.
The accidental touches, they linger, but no one pays any attention--- perhaps not even Caspian and Lucy themselves.
IV.
"What happened then?" he asks, almost inaudibly over the sloshing of the waves. "Did the prince ask for the mermaid's hand?"
Lucy shakes her head. "No." Her voice is soft and sad, like the look she gives him before tilting her head back to gaze at the stars. "No, the prince found someone else. The mermaid turned to sea foam, and the ocean washed her away."
V.
Lucy's hair whips wildly about her face in the breeze. She looks like a child, but she's giving him advice on how to rule, and her eyes are so much older.
She stops abruptly, asks him what he's staring at.
"You are too young for me," he says, "and yet in this world you have been dead for thousands of years."
There is such longing in Caspian's voice that Lucy can't help but reach out to place her hand over his own.
VI.
"You can't." Her voice breaks. "We don't ever stay. To love us is to say goodbye, in the end."
"Then goodbye," he says, drawing her into his arms. "Goodbye." Kissing her forehead. "Goodbye." Her cheeks. "Goodbye." Her closed eyes.
