Katie threw her head back, ecstatic, as the wind ruffled her short hair underneath her beret. She wrapped her arms tighter around the crimson-haired boy in front of her, his furry vest warm even in the rain. His gloved hands tightened around the handles of the motorcycle as he gunned it, thrusting them forward. She couldn't help but squeal, a mix between a laugh and a scream.
He swerved around the corner, then cursed as he realized that his pockets were about to lose their contents. Katie deftly caught his DS, and slipped it into her own pocket. "Thanks."
"Don't mention it."
He took another sharp corner, and skidded to a stop in a partially covered alleyway. Another motorcycle sped past, a streak of blond hair flashing by and a muttered curse word before it was out of sight. Matt smiled. "Guess we know who's the better driver now, huh, Mello?"
The pair trudged into the small bakery, and settled down with their pastries. Matt, despite having already devoured most of his donut, already had his eye on her cupcake. Katie looked at, then looked at him. "Would you like some?" He nodded, his eyes not leaving the treat. In one swift motion, she had taken a finger of icing and dabbed it on his nose. "There," she said, surveying her work.
She giggled as he went cross-eyed, then licked it off. She finished her cupcake, and they snuck out the side door as they saw Mello come in. They laughed as they peered through the small window, watching his confusion turn to annoyance to happiness as he settled down with a chocolate croissant.
Matt eyed her. "What?"
"I think you missed a spot," he said, leaning in and chastely touching his lips to hers.
Mello stood up and threw away his trash. Where are they? A flash of movement outside the window caught his eye. He peered out, curious, to see them kissing in the rain, oblivious to everything. Mello sighed, then went outside and mounted his bike. He revved the engine, opting to give the pair peace for once.
Some things never change.
