A/N: I was prompted to write something with Aang and Appa.. and I went here. Kind of sad, and yet another drabble. Haa.

An Escape

Aang is quiet as he makes it to where Appa is. The flying bison grunts when Aang prods him, as if to question why he was even there. "Shhh, Appa," the young airbender whispers, scratching the bison's nose. "We have to… go somewhere. Anywhere. I need some time, I think."

And soon they're flying through the air, despite the slight protests Appa made in the beginning.

"Isn't this great, buddy?" Aang laughs (a withered laugh, laced with worry and too many thoughts). "I think we needed to get out for a bit. Maybe we should go visit some friends? Or check out some of the animals! Kuzon told me about the penguins in the South Pole once--well, he's never seen them, but his dad has, and--"

Appa lets out a groan, clearly able to see past the facade.

With an eye roll, the Avatar leans back, resting against the soft fur. "What? I'm fine, perfectly fine. I just wanted to get out--you know that feeling, right? We should go have a bit of fun while we can," he adds, slowly. "I… don't know how much longer I can do fun things like this, you know? They want me to do a lot of work… a lot. And I'm not sure…." He trails off with a sigh.

He is a kid, and he just wants to enjoy it for a bit longer.

(They didn't see the storm until it was too late.)
