The cool Norwegian breeze blew across her face as she sat outside on the grass in the backyard. It was summer which meant no fishing until September. She enjoyed the time off, but at the same time she didn't. When she was fishing she felt safe because she didn't have to deal with her Aunt and everyone else. She was out of reality and she wish she could forever. She's been here for ten years. Ten years away from her baby sister who she never got to know. Ten years away from her parents. The two people who are supposed to protect her, but couldn't because her mom back home in New Jersey taking care of everything. While her dad was in Alaska crab fishing. She frowned as she thought of her dad. She loved him, but at the same time she hated him because it was his decision to send her to Norway.
Maybe that's why she acted out when she was younger. Maybe that's why she lit her desk on fire at school when she was seven. Maybe that's why she punched the boy at school for a reason she can't remember. Maybe that's why she was always angry. Maybe that's why she got banned from every elementary school in Norway. Maybe that's why she wanted to be a crab fisherman. She smiled as she thought of crab fishing with her dad. No matter how upset she was with her dad she couldn't help, but crack a smile when she thought of how much she was like him and how much she wanted to go fishing with him. She was a troubled child though and she put her family through hell because of how she acted. Her aunt said to her parents that it was expected when your child is the apparently the mortal reincarnation of Lilith. Oh yes, that's what her family in Norway thought. Stupid family legends.
She stood up and walked towards the docks where all the fishermen and their deckhands were. Everyone at the docks would stop and stare at her. Some would whisper bad things about her. Around the docks she was known as 'djevelens datter', or Devil's daughter. Her family in Norway called her that too. Instead of calling her by her real name people would call her 'djevelens datter' and over the years she developed a habit of responding to that name. She never fully understood why she was called it, but when she got older she learned it was her ancestors' fault and not hers.
Unfortunately, because of his stupid mistake she had to suffer for it. She sighed as she walked towards the end of the dock. She sat down on the bench and looked out to sea. She knew the story of her ancestors was supposedly a legend, but her family in Norway seemed to believe it and she had to suffer the consequences. She put her head in her hands and cried.
Maybe that's why she hated her life. Maybe that's where the suicidal thoughts came from. Maybe that's why she wish the sea would take her whenever she went out on the boat. Maybe that's why she was unloved by all the men she loved. Maybe that's why she was alone in this dark, cruel world.
