Author's note: Aw geez! Normally I would write more for this couple as they're quickly becoming one of my favorite all-time pairings, but this was mostly written on a whim. I was feeling kinda depressed after working on my other fic, Dark Memories, so I just had to come up with something more happy. xD; It's short, but I hope you enjoy it anyway! Don't forget to review. :D

On the way home

"Jeez, who designed that thing?" Miwa asked, rubbing at his wrist where the motion-figure system glove had been locked in place. It was hard to tell in the light of the setting sun, but the swelling seemed to have gone down quite a bit since they'd left the underground card-fighting arena.

"So," Miwa prodded as him and his best friend traversed the familiar pavement along the riverbed. "Was it worth it? Did you gain anything from all that?"

"Not really," Kai said flatly, his eyes fixed on nothing in particular.

Miwa looked at Kai for a moment, studying him as they walked. His hands were in his pockets as usual and his face showed no signs of victory whatsoever. After everything that he had just put his best friend through, Miwa would think that Kai would at least have a decent conversation with him. He hated having to bring up anything negative like Ren just to get him to talk to him.

"There was one thing I thoroughly enjoyed though," Kai admitted suddenly.

"Oh, really?" Miwa blinked, taken aback slightly. "And what might that be?"

"I didn't think Jun would involve you in the way that he did" Kai said, chuckling briefly to himself. "That was highly amusing."

"Yeah, very funny," Miwa said sarcastically. "You know, you had me worried there for second." He added. "You looked so stoic near the end of that match, even I couldn't tell what you were thinking."

"You couldn't see my hand from where you were, could you?" Kai looked surprised, turning to look at Miwa as he waited for a response.

"Nope, sorry." Miwa joked. "I was too busy getting bullets shot at me and ducking to avoid your beasts tackling each other."

"Miwa, it's just a hologram." Kai stated, looking like he was a math teacher staring at a student that had just given him the wrong answer. "You weren't really going to start crying like you said you were, right?"

Miwa sighed. As unsympathetic as ever, I see.

"Holograms or not, it was insane being in the middle of all that! Seriously, there's something wrong with you and that Jun guy!" Miwa kicked an agitated foot against a small rock, sending it flying across the pavement out in front of him to prove his point.

"Oh really?" Kai knew Miwa was messing with him.

Realizing that they were going to part ways soon on their journey home, Miwa decided to do something daring. And depending on Kai's mood, he didn't always go along with it. But today he had a clear advantage. He quickly and skillfully slipped an arm around Kai's own right arm, linking them as they continued walking.

Kai felt his cheeks flush slightly at the gesture, but didn't bother pulling away. It was the least he could do to make up for getting Miwa held hostage earlier.

Miwa smiled as Kai's arm tightened around his in response, pulling it in against his side.

"Do you have to be home right now?" Kai asked.

Miwa blinked, not sure if he had heard Kai correctly.

"Uh...Well, not really." Miwa replied. "It's summer vacation after all and-"

"Do you want to go get a drink at the Vanguard Cafe?" The words sounded foreign coming from Kai, but Miwa could tell by his gestures and expression that he was trying his best.

"Of course!" Miwa exclaimed. "But you're paying for me this time. And I might just have more than a drink."

"Hmph," Kai smirked. "You remembered."

The two continued to chat back and forth until they reached the cafe, where Kai happily paid for their split parfait.
