Standard Disclaimer: I do not own Supernatural or any of it's characters. This is my first story.
It had been 62 long days since the fire erupted in Sam's nursery. 62 days since Mary's death. 62 days since Dean has slept through the night. He woke up screaming every night after a few hours of fitful sleep. His cries and screams waking up both Sam and John; as John now insisted that both boys slept in his bed so he could be on guard if anyone or anything ever dared to come back for them.
A typical night with the Winchesters now consisted of John putting both Sam and Dean down for bed at the same time. He lay in bed with his boys until they both fell asleep. Then he pulled up a chair next to them with a shot gun in hand and waited. He waited in that chair every night until he could no longer fight sleep and nodded out in the chair.
John slept while Dean fought and whimpered for hours before finally waking himself up screaming, crying and lashing out. He blindly reached for his father. John woke with a start, like always and moved to the bed. He leaned his back against the headboard and struggled against deans thrashing limbs and finally cradled his young son's body across his large chest.
Tonight Sam had slept through his big brothers nightmare which John was grateful for. He was too exhausted to deal with two screaming babies. He let out a long sigh and shifted Dean in his arms so that his face was hidden in the crook of John's neck; his tears falling onto his father's neck and shirt collar. John gently rubbed his back in a soothing repetitive motion while holding down the arms that continued to struggle.
It wasn't long before the screams faded to whimpers and Deans arms and legs seized to protest and fell limp around his father's neck. John finally looked down at his eldest son's red tear streaked face. The young child's broken eyes looked back. John leaned down and pressed a kiss to Deans sweat slicked forehead murmuring a jumble of "its okay. I'm here. Everything will be okay, I promise my beautiful boy. Daddy's here."
Dean's body fully relaxed and sleep began to take over as his father began to sing. It was the only song he could remember when the nightmares began and now it's the only song that seems to fit.
Close your eyes,
Have no fear,
The monsters gone,
He's on the run and your daddy's here,
Beautiful,
Beautiful, beautiful,
Beautiful Boy,
Beautiful,
Beautiful, beautiful,
Beautiful Boy
Before you go to sleep,
Say a little prayer,
Every day in every way,
It's getting better and better,
Beautiful,
Beautiful, beautiful,
Beautiful Boy,
Beautiful,
Beautiful, beautiful,
Beautiful Boy,
Out on the ocean sailing away,
I can hardly wait,
To see you to come of age,
But I guess we'll both,
Just have to be patient,
Cause it's a long way to go,
A hard road home
Cause it's a long way to go,
But in the meantime,
Before you cross the street,
Take my hand,
Life is just what happens to you,
While your busy making other plans,
Beautiful,
Beautiful, beautiful,
Beautiful Boy,
Beautiful,
Beautiful, beautiful,
Beautiful Boy,
Before you go to sleep,
Say a little prayer,
Every day every way
It's getting better and better,
Beautiful,
Beautiful, beautiful,
Beautiful Boy,
Darling,
Darling,
Darling Dean.
Once Dean fell back to sleep Johns own sad, angry painful tears began to fall. They would continue to fall until Dean once again woke up screaming.
This routine continued for a year before Dean finally started sleeping through the night again. Just in time for Sam's nightmares to begin.
