Lost
by

Lost and alone in a land unknown
A land of glare and chemical smell
No trees to freshen the air
No brook or stream to liven the evening
Just the somber silence of hopelessness

Darkness was my beginning
A warm darkness
A safe darkness
You knew you were never alone
The familiar embrace of siblings

A childhood shattered by events bigger than life
Forces out of control beyond imagination or dream
Torn from the verdant fields of home
Cruelly ripped away from your family
Your world now a Hell of torture

Everybody looks so blank here, lost like you
Eyes looking into the void with pitiful sadness
Some callous, some uncaring and all unfeeling
Ears that hear not your words
Their souls as sterile as their white clothing

Every night you dream
Dreams of escape and flight
They drive your desperate desire to return
To your fog-shrouded highland home
And you know that is impossible

They call you a freak and brand you insane
Their words daggers in your mind and soul
They think they are gods with wisdom for all
They judge you and tell you that you are wrong
As they mold you in their graven image of normal

A wistful look out the window to the misted night
The brilliant moonlight diffused by the condensation
Of your weary, exhausted breath
On the chilled panels of glass on a frosty winter night
The picturesque beauty spoiled by heavy steel bars

Tears flow burning like lava down your cheeks
While you dream of the night chill's bite on your skin
Wishing you could escape this hospital ward
Once again to spread your wings and leap into the night
To triumphantly glide the moonlit skies of home
