To Jimmy Olsen
Rating: G
Spoilers: Doomsday
Summary: A tribute to Jimmy Olsen.
Author's Note: This is my reaction to the finale of season eight of Smallville and does not deal with any of the cliffhangers of the episode. Clark is not in this. It is just Lois talking about her friend.
I have to say that I was completely pissed off by the finale. They threw in a lame plot twist that I do not buy so I say screw the twist at the end. Aaron Ashmore played Jimmy Olsen and last night they killed off an iconic character. So I had to write my goodbyes and I did it through Lois because I feel that she is the only one that truly cared for Jimmy consistently on the show and that she would be the one to give him a proper goodbye.
Disclaimer: I own nothing in this story.
Lois could feel her body shaking. The air felt so dry and so still in the basement of the Daily Planet. She was trying her hardest not to break down and cry heavy sobs. It was so hard to keep it in as they waited for their shot glasses to all be full.
Jimmy Olsen was dead.
Jimmy Olsen was dead.
Lois could not stop that from repeating over and over in her mind. She could feel the tears sting at the corners of her eyes, and she looked up at the ceiling to keep them at bay. Lois owed it to Jimmy to at least keep it together before she even had her say.
The bullpen was packed with people paying their respects to their fallen coworker; paying their respects to their murdered coworker.
Jimmy Olsen had been murdered. Lois wondered how anyone could take the life of someone like Jimmy. It was such a waste.
A picture of Jimmy resided on a desk in the middle of the room. And all of them stood facing that smiling face of his and to see it staring back at her so full of joy made Lois feel sort of lost.
It honestly was surprising how emotional she was over his death but it made a certain amount of sense too. They had spent a lot of time together in and outside of the Daily Planet. The days that she had spent sitting by Jimmy's bedside in Star City hoping and praying that he would wake up were days she would never forget.
It turns out that those prayers had not been answered like she had thought they were.
With her tear filled eyes Lois saw the last shot glass had been filled to the brim with liquid. She stood up a little straighter and cleared her throat. She was only addressing one person, though.
"I—I am not sure where to begin. Maybe I should start with the most obvious thing in the world." Lois whispered letting out a shaky breath. "You were a good person Jimmy Olsen. The kind of person that is rare in this world. Jimmy you—you always… did your best to be a good friend to me."
Lois felt a tear slip down her cheek and struggled to keep her voice from cracking.
"Maybe we had our ups and downs but hey, who doesn't? You are—were so full of life, and energy, and goodness. I always believed-believed you would have a bright future. Maybe I never really said it but I always believed."
The tears began to slip out of her eyes at a rapid pace and Lois felt her chest begin to move up and down as she took in each labored breath. It was just so hard to face. It was just so hard to say out loud, to make it real that Jimmy Olsen wasn't getting the life that he really deserved.
Lois looked at the picture and made herself get out a few last words before she completely broke down in tears.
"Jimmy, you're the best, we love you, we'll never forget you. Please raise your glasses," Lois said in a commanding voice as everyone did as she told them. "Here's to the one and only Jimmy Olsen!"
She tipped her head back and forced the biting liquid down her throat. When she was finished Lois let the tears flow freely and she grieved.
End.
